State Coal Mine

About

The State Coal Mine in Wonthaggi is a black coal mine that was worked from 1909-1968. Visitors can take an underground tour and so much more! Open 7 days.

Story

The State Coal Mine offers a journey back in time to discover what life working in a coal mine was like in the 1900s. Venture underground through the dark network of tunnels to get hands-on at the coal face and learn how Victoria’s hard working men extracted the black gold.

Only 90 minutes from Melbourne, the State Coal Mine is the only historic coal mine experience in the Southern Hemisphere, offering interactive fun and interest for the whole family both above and below ground.

Rising from its beginnings as a make shift ‘Tent Town’, Wonthaggi quickly grew to the thriving town we know today. Operating from 1909 to 1968, the State Coal Mine produced almost 17 million tonnes of coal for Victoria’s industries and railways.

Free entry to all above ground facilities includes the new State Coal Mine Visitor Centre with cafe, theatrette and shop, the museum, heritage trail, historic buildings and sheltered BBQ area.

Brilliant place with a great team of people keep in it going. Some great old machinery along with a stream train. Fantastic cafe with a big selection of Aussie classics. The coal mine tour is obviously the highlight with super friendly guides taking you round and sharing their stories. Great day out for the family.

This was a surprise. Been planning to go for years. Tour was really engaging and interesting. Took my 3 boys who struggled a bit with the low roof (they are 195, 197 and 203 cms tall though!) but all part of the fun. A good way to spend a couple of hours. Fred was a great tour guide also!

Surprisingly enough it was actually a great tour. I did not expect that much however the guide was so amazing. He enhanced what it could have been just a walk underground with local stories and his experience as a young boy in the mine. A great fun

Superb history location with a great cafe. Mine tours are fascinating. Can walk around the ground and check out the historic buildings without paying an entry fee. Well worth a visit.

First time ever, we went down to the coal mine underground. We experienced old days of a coal miners life. Lou, our tour guide served his whole life in the coal mines. We really appreciated what they did in the past in very extreme living conditions. Friendly staffs who went out of their way to looked after us. Really reasonable price! Well set up facilities. Definitely worth to visit for the trip! Unique experience, especially to kids education.
