Was looking forward to seeing somewhere I've read about but not seen. Most disappointed as I'd looked forward to seeing the architecture but the church wasn't open. Had a walk round the graveyard, took a couple of photos and left. Will have to try again another visit. One day I will see internally.
We both enjoyed the opportunity to visit this beautiful church and surrounding area. All the years of coming to the island this little gem had slip by but on reading a brochure noticed it. Queen Victoria's own church close to Osbourne house would recommend a visit plenty of history inside and out plus tea rooms
Don't miss this, especially if you go to Osborne House just up the road from here. This is where Queen Victoria and her family came to worship while staying at Osborne. Beautiful country church with lots of connections to Victoria.
Whippingham , Isle of Wight The village of Whippingham, and St Mildred’s Church as its parish church, are best known for their connections with Queen Victoria. Whippingham was the centre of a royal estate and Queen Victoria took a close interest in ‘her people’ in Whippingham. This is reflected in the many memorials in St Mildred’s Church which commemorate members of the Royal Family .The architect was A.J.Humbert who later went on to design Sandringham and many other buildings associated with Queen Victoria, he was assisted by Prince Albert who made a huge contribution to the design, but alas died before the church was back in use. The family worshipped at St Mildred’s when in residence at Osborne. Queen Victoria’s youngest daughter Princess Beatrice and her husband were married here and buried here. Been to island many times, visited Osbourne House, never knew Queen Victoria had a church here, set in lovely surroundings, alot of history to catch up on,great morning spent there.
Couldn't have been better. Free entry and very welcoming staff. Cafe over the road which is cash only but serves nice, home made snacks
Lovely church, worth a visit after Osborne House as it is the Royal Church to the house. Friendly volunteers to great you, parking and a cafe
Church advertised as closing at 4pm, we arrived at 2:45 but went to the village hall for a coffee, got to the church for 3:20pm opened the door to be met by a man who advised they were closed in a very rude manner. Would recommend the village hall for coffee, the ladies there were very helpful and pleasant
really interesting church full of history . However be careful leaving by side gate as the steps were slippy . My friend slipped broke her wrist.!!! we had to use side gate as the front gate seemed locked
Absolutely beautiful and peaceful place to visit. I was lucky enough to turn up, after the grass was cut, and the smell of freshly cut grass was in the air.
