Lovely church to visit in the sunshine and heat. Interesting history and named after the patron saint of prisoners. Beautiful round stained glass window on the back wall of the church is stunning. Set on well kept grounds, it retains a beauty of its own whilst set in a bustling summer street.
St. Leonard's of Matakana, built in 1914, is one of five churches that make up the Parish of Warkworth in the Auckland Diocese. An all wood church capped with a corrugated iron blue roof, St. Leonard's has white painted exterior walls and an attractive varnished interior built of native wood. Features inside include traditional wood pews embellished with charming embroidered cushions made by the parishioners, and a circular stain glass window above the altar that depicts the various farming activities of the Matakana district. The church is open on Saturdays, which is market day, and for Sunday morning service. Next to it is an Opportunity shop that's worth a visit.
