Visited here between 11am-12pm on Thursday for the first time to do my assignment in somewhere quiet. I was expecting to be able to focus better than I do at home but I couldn’t concentrate at all because of kids screaming. Better find somewhere else if you are looking for quiet space. I personally think kids having those places around is very good but I hoped some more effort for the library in separating the area or shutting the noise.
I love it here. Been coming here for weeks to study most weekdays. It's mostly quiet. There are some community activities that take place in the library, but they're not usually too distracting. You do get the odd loud person, playing music out loud on their phone type of thing, but in my experience most people are happy to turn it down if you ask nicely and the staff are very helpful and respectful with that as well if someone is being difficult. I can imagine that St Kilda isn't the easiest library to work at, so I really value having this as a service with a hardworking, community-oriented and book-loving team that any library would be lucky to have. By far one of the most underrated services that City of Port Phillip provide, the library is genuinely a beacon of classic St Kilda larrikinism in this ever more-gentrified city.
I think Port Phillip’s library offers a wider variety of content than the City of Melbourne’s! Their storytime is definitely the highlight. For one, they have regular LOTE Languages Other Than English storytimes, which is a great touch. And for two, they offer more amenities for storytime activities, making it a more fun and engaging experience!nnAlso, they actually have a room for you to watch DVDs! Another surprise I found was the ceiling decorations inside the parents room. They really caught my baby's attention and made nappy change easier for me!
Nice local library to spend your afternoon reading, using one of their many free-to-use computers 2 hours max, studying, or working on your laptop. Many desks are available and they have some private study rooms available to book, good free wifi connection, and printing service is available at $0.20 per B/W page $1 for colored page. Books and DVDs collections seem extensive, too, and this place is so easy to reach with tram station right in front of library.
Unfortunately I have only had bad experiences at this library, which is too bad because I love libraries and want to support their mission. The library itself is fine but it's not very user friendly.nnThe first time I came the staff were kind but not very knowledgeable about the library and it took forever to get any service at all even when there weren't other people being served. Then today I went in to ask if they had volume two of a book I got from that library. He said no and gave me no other solutions. So I asked if they had a way to borrow from other libraries and he said interlibrary loan is down and they don't know when it will be back. So I asked if he could take down my information and write a note to contact me when it's back and he flat out refused. I know it's not their fault the whole system is down but it's weird to me they don't alert patrons when services are unavailable and come back, and even weirder he wouldn't do it for me when I specifically asked.nnIt's a shame because it's the closest library to me but I'm going to look for another one.
