St Kilda Botanical Gardens

Story

St Kilda Botanical Gardens are a botanical garden located in the suburb St Kilda, Victoria, Australia. Located on the former site of a gravel pit and rubbish dump, they were formally gazetted on 28 September 1859 and opened in 1861.In October 2010 City of Port Phillip provided funds for the design of four distinctive new gates, to celebrate the Gardens 150th anniversary. The gates were installed on Tennyson, Dickens and Herbert Streets. They were designed and sculpted by designer/blacksmith David Wood of Bent Metal. In 1948 the Alister Clark Memorial Rose Garden was opened; in 1985 it was redesigned in its current style. At one time the Alister Clark garden contained a large selection of roses bred by him, but only a few remain, crowded out by David Austin ones. This garden should not be confused with the comprehensive Alister Clark Memorial Rose Garden at Bulla, north of Melbourne. The ornamental pond near the sub-tropical rainforest conservatory is being refurbished. At the same time, St Kilda Rain Man, designed by Corey Thomas and Ken Arnold and installed in 2005 will be repaired. Rain Man fountain is solar powered and uses recycled water from the pond below.

A very nice location for shooting wedding photo portraits and videos. So many nice little pockets of trees, bushes and frames that are very easy to work with. I have only been here when the weather is very nice, so the light is always very easy. If the weather was bad, well, who knows ha ha ha... Also, while I was visiting most recently, there were signs up for the 'Sunset Cinema'. I didn't get to see it, but I think it would be very nice :
The Saint Kilda Botanic Garden in Melbourne is a true gem. As soon as you enter, you're greeted by a beautifully landscaped garden with an impressive variety of plants, flowers, and trees. The garden is well-maintained and has plenty of benches to sit and enjoy the scenery. There's also a small pond with ducks and other wildlife, which adds to the peaceful atmosphere. One of the highlights of the garden is the conservatory, which houses a stunning collection of exotic plants. The conservatory is well-designed and maintained, and the plants are labeled, which is helpful for those who are interested in learning more about them. Overall, I highly recommend visiting the Saint Kilda Botanic Garden. It's a great place to take a leisurely stroll, have a picnic, or simply enjoy the beauty of nature.
My friend lives around the corner from here….so this place is extra special to me. The houses around here are so nice too….nothing beats the iconic St Kilda, something so special and esoteric about these gardens too - children’s playground a nice touch for the kids. Beautiful and stunning place! Great community feel.
The Rose garden was a particular highlight for me, although I also quite enjoyed the fountain aswell, my visit here with my partner has been a lovely way to spend our afternoon, I very much recommend it to anyone near by, very calm and secluded.
There are many aspects of St Kilda Gardens that I appreciate, but there is something remarkably enchanting about visiting this botanical oasis during autumn. The immediate transformation one experiences upon stepping into the park is breathtaking. As the autumn hues set in, the park is lit up with a warm palette of red, orange, and gold that harmoniously complements the clear blue skies of the season. From the rustling of leaves underfoot to the pleasant aroma of the earth, every moment spent here in autumn is a sensory delight. The gardens are impeccably maintained, with each tree, flower bed, and grassy knoll reflecting the attention and care invested by the dedicated gardeners. The orderly paths meandering throughout invite you to explore and immerse yourself in nature's tranquillity, providing a serene retreat from the bustle of city life.I also want to highlight the excellent amenities at St Kilda Gardens. Clean, well-situated benches offer plenty of spots to sit, reflect, and appreciate the surrounding beauty. The café within the gardens provides a variety of refreshments, making it a perfect spot for a cozy outdoor lunch or a warm cup of coffee on a crisp autumn day.
Really pretty place! Has got a lot of nice open space for outdoor activities and has a really nice ambience to it. Nice for a slow stroll a picnic too!
Beautiful. Absolutely love the greenhouse with the ponds inside. The seasonal veggie garden was stunning. Just shame we can pick it for consumption, would be great to feed hungry families or those less fortunate. Seems a waste that they grow it and then get rid of it. The play equipment is very 90s; so not appropriate in summer with the metal slides getting close to boiling point. But, none the less very fun for the kids in the cooler months.
Great place to go bring the family. Childrens playground. Rose garden. Feed the pigeons by the lake. Pet friendly. Movies in summer. Its got it all!
Beautiful place to wander through in summer and winter. It's getting better and better as the staff are creating new areas for the public to enjoy, like the Sensory Garden, Fern Gully and Guilfoyle's Volcano.
I visit often. It's a great spot for children, people watching, plants and a good wonder about. Had many a picnic here. Much appreciated.
