St. Flannan's Catholic Church is situated on the very busy Handford Road, Zillmere. And since it's a low-set building, it's difficult to see it while you're driving unless you're actually looking out for it.nnI don't know how it's laid out, but it has the happy result of having the parishioners close to the alter wherever they are seated.nnIt's very up to date in terms of technology. All around the church there are screens hanging from the ceiling displaying whatever is necessary for the particular service. In this case we were attending a funeral and could follow on the screen the life of the deceased.nnAlso, while there was no choir, there's a small room with microphones etc., so that one singer can lead the rest of the congregation in the various hymns.nnThere's some beautiful iconic holy pictures around the walls, and there's even fold away steps for those parishioners who want to kneel down.nnThe parish priest who celebrated the mass presented a very moving and dignified service which included the Holy Eucharist.nnWhen carrying the coffin from the church to the waiting car, instead of placing the coffin on their shoulders, the men carried it by the handles on the coffin. I felt it was a move in the right direction. I'm always anxious when I watch the men going down the stairs and looking a bit unsteady. It didn't happen this time.
Lovely place to attend mass. The priest is nice & friendly. Volunteers are helpful. If go to 5pm mass tea & coffee are supplied & very 4th Sunday night a light meal could be supplied. There not pushy either very friendly people.
A church that doesn’t match the outside it looks maybe 1990. but step inside it looks mismatched, 80’s decor, horrible fluorescent lighting, wooden panels, the ceiling, mismatched furnishings the carpet. it looks more like a school hall from 1982 than a place of worship I see extensions have been done in the past as one part of the church does not match the other and it’s hard to listen as the speaker system is mono and causes disorientation, and the altar looks more of a afterthought. In this age of low patrons I saw low patronage whilst I was there maybe it was because of the old drab decor that keeps away the future and the youth numbers of the church were low I highly recommend that St Flannans church get a make over inside a spruce up that brings it to today, with LED tvs, multicoloured mood LED lighting, a better Hifi stereo speaker system that isn’t from 1980 with base and treble that makes the choir sound heavenly. And the altar relocated to the opposite corner making the new altar a semi round altar. Some of the brickwork needs to be rendered as red is so 1970 and aircond or ceiling fans are needed in summer, currently leaving the windows open on a busy main road on a hot day can often take away from the service and what’s being said the church needs airconditioning. Hopefully by redoing the inside of St Flannans church it will bring back the youth and the church numbers.
Because father Raphael is inviting and I like the Sunday services despite the choir as the lead vocalist sings everything and has changed a few of what I have grown up knowing as a youngster
St Flannans is a beautiful,peaceful church and the multicultural parishioners are very friendly
