I can't speak for now, but when I attended the school back When this campus was 11 & 12 only, I only have positive experiences. That being said, it wasn't for everyone. At that time it was great for kids like myself who had issues with mainstream schooling. The students were allowed more control over their own school life & allowed us freedoms over our own learning eg. We choose to come to class and do the work, or don't. If you don't want to put in the work, then we just fail, they didn't insist &push &force us during the year. But also, if we wanted to do the work & made the choice to put in the effort, the support was always there 110%. This approach was great for kids like me who refused to do work when told I had to. Putting the onus back on me to choose myself, this worked . And the support from my teachers at that time was nothing short of amazing. I was ready to drop out of school at year 10 & just go down the drugs path, I agreed to try a term in yr 11 at Sandy high at my Nana's request bcoz I respected her, and turns out was the best thing for me bcoz I ended up staying and completing year 12. Was years ago, probably teachers are different now, no idea, so I guess this is more of an appreciation post for past teachers and students of the school, rather than a current review. nDidnt have to wear uniform to the 11/12 campus back then tho, dress code was completely free dress, practically anything goes, the only rule was no hate type messages on clothing & nothing that's weaponry I guess. Otherwise literally anything. I feel like bringing in uniforms for this campus was a mistake tbh. But
if you’ve heard the reputation about this school you’re wrong. it’s not better, it’s WORSE, far far worse. this schools teacher population is a frequent to ego maniacs, sever power-trippers, immoral, corrupt and unsympathetic. and yes i’m point all my scrawny fingers at you frank. this apathetic man hides his insecurities behind a facade of seriousness and integrity but it is easy to see through if you look for the right signs facebook. the most valuable lesson i’ve learnt from this school is to not fall a victim to authoritarianism. now, let’s talk about this school utilisation of money. they spend around 20 million i estimate on a sport centre but don’t fix bathroom locks and not giving us a yearly school camp. and the certain way this school wants outsiders to perceive them is nothing but questionable. dress code; they claim to enforce dress code rules for the sake of children’s health and well-being but the real purpose is to appear as welcoming as possible. this is clear due to the restricts of the most minuscule forms of self-expression e.g. piercings, hair colour, makeup, HELL even the stitching on your shoes! oh and let’s not mention the times i’ve heard about students getting in trouble for wearing religious jewellery. i’m only breaking the surface here toonsummery: all in all this school is a sub-consious variant of the standford prison experiment.nnREVOLT AND RISE ABOVE
Blazers and uniform are the most important thing at the school, it comes before wellbeing and health, my daughter was riding to school wearing a jacket on a 10 degree morning and was given 2 detentions for not wearing uniform. She is now at beaumaris and loving it. Some kind teachers but from my experience the majority were very lacking in empathy.
The principal of the junior school is excellent and Sandy has some wonderful, creative teachers.nHowever, over the last 5 years there has been a marked drop in welfare/care for the students and a lack acknowledgement of achievement - along with an increasing attention on aspects like uniform rather than progressive education. The school would benefit from a new and innovative Principal.
We have two children at this school, one on the senior and one on the junior campus. There's a wide variety of programs on offer across sport, the arts, and sciences. We had a bullying issue a couple of years ago which the school dealt with quickly and hasn't recurred. The senior campus is fairly run-down but that's government funding for you. No hesitation in recommending the school.
