Not a good place to stay if you are transgender - the college has a lot of work to do in order to be considered a safe place for queer people. The application form that can be found on their website included an area to put preferred name and gender, so I filled that in - this would be one of the first times where I could introduce myself as who I am and that's all I would be known as. Upon arrival, I realised that unfortunately this information was not noticed - my deadname was everywhere and I was on the all-female floor. Had this mistake been acknowledged and I had been given an apology, I would have been okay with simply considering this a learning moment for staff members. However, I was never given an apology for this mistake. This error turned into months of conversations between me and the Operations Manager, with me expressing discomfort with my situation and asking for help. I asked for counselling three times, reminding admin of my ask multiple times, and was never given it. It eventually got to the point where I no longer felt safe going to the dining hall at dinner time due to the stares I would get, so I would just order a late meal or not eat at all, and I would wait for the toilets near my room to clear as I was afraid of making any of the women on my floor uncomfortable. I was moved out at the start of the second semester into another accommodation for my safety and mental wellbeing, and spent that entire semester working through the trauma of the situation with a JCU counsellor. I was apprehensive to apply to this college given the religion background and the history that has with my community, but the meals situation was the best out of all the accomodations that I looked at. I was also told multiple times that the college supported all walks of life - it's unfortunate that their actions never showed that throughout my entire experience here. I would like for it to be known that the people in the front office were so kind and welcoming to me the whole time I was a resident - the only people who seemed to have issues with me were members of management. I hope, genuinely, that this college learns and becomes a better place for members of my community - it's incredibly important that trans and queer people know our safe places, and on the other side of that, that we know the places that are not safe for us.
Great places to stay, helpful friendly staff, wonderful food. Great place to start your uni life
