I came in for dinner the other day, the staff are all lovely, the new menu is extensive and delicious i will be back. Note to the owner, The waitress with the purple hair is a keeper! She was helpful and patient with my father, haven't been to such a great restaurant in a while.
Used to enjoy the drinks and staff at The Reel. My friend who’s highly allergic to eggs and nuts - and let them know, clearly - was served mayonnaise with her chat potatoes. I tasted it. And it didn’t look like sour cream, which was the first tip-off. Though the manager said it was sour cream as he served it. This was after them deciding to bake the potatoes instead of frying them, to make sure she didn’t get contaminated. She took the mayonnaise back to let them know and they replaced it with actual sour cream. My salad was fine. When it came time to pay, he forgot to add a “gluten free” charge to my friends bill, and added it to mine without mentioning anything. We only found out there was a surcharge when I questioned why my bill was higher than expected. They charged $3.50 to put the chat potatoes into the oven to bake them, instead of frying them. “It’s only $3.50.” the manager replied when I made light of the charge. It is only $3.50. But after they served my friend something that would have given her a night of vomiting - had we not being paying attention - it seemed pretty lame how he went about adding in this extra charge. At a minimum let us know when ordering that there is a surcharge for making the big effort to throw the potatoes in the oven. Not going to return to this old favourite, unfortunately. Not until it changes hands again.
I like others who worked at the Reel advise that no one supports this disgusting establishment. The two previous head chefs and over 10 of the staff quit including myself due to lack of pay, professionalism and respect as some of my fellow workers were owed up to $2000 dollars of which they still have not received sadly this is the same case that all the workers were suffering. Please understand that the owners are corrupt and so is the Reel cafe. I highly advise not getting a job there even if you are desperate because you are wasting your time. Please, I urge all people considering going here to not, the cinema next door makes coffee, get it from there or from a wide variety of cafes in Belgrave
Went here for dinner with a few friends before a movie a while ago and it was probably one of the worst experiences I've ever had at a resturaunt. All of the drinks that we got were flat and barely cold and when we complained the staff said that we could either deal with it, order a different drink or just have no drink at all. The food took a little over 1 hour to come even though it wasn't even busy and we had ordered very basic dishes. And the food it's self was mediocre and not at all worth the wait or the price we paid. Would never reccomend
Food was great tonight, always has been. Service was pretty appalling. Never have we been herded out of a dinner venue at 8:15pm like that however. Clearly wanted us gone before 8, despite us having a 7:15pm dinner booking for 4. Don't take the booking if you're not up to providing the service. Doubt we'll be back which is a shame given the good food.
CURRENT REVIEW COMING SOON! PLEASE NOTE THAT THE FOLLOWING REVIEW WAS POSTED PRIOR TO NEW OWNERSHIP IN SEPTEMBER 2018: The owner is rather unpleasant and has no customer service skills grumpy, bossy and altogether unwelcoming. The staff are friendly but clearly tired of working under the conditions provided. The food is good, but the overall vibe has definitely gone downhill since the change of ownership. If you want a drink before the movie, just go next door to Cameo Cinema, they do coffee and alcohol too.
Worst experience of my life, it smelt like ass in there and the alcohol was out in the open triggering my severe alcoholism, apsoluely unprofessional! I ordered fish and chips and I got a gross soggy Big Mac instead. Heard some rumours going around that the owners abuse the staff and refuse to pay them which is basically slavery so go eat a bootyhole Reel cafe.
Although the food is OK there is very shady business practices and not paying their younger workers. I personally know 2 people who are each owed hundreds of dollars which the cafe refuses to pay them. If you want a lunch or coffee I highly suggest the other cafes towards the roundabout.
I used to love this place but the new owners have made it terrible me and my friend went in there and waited half an hour for service!!! Before we left. But since we liked this place we gave it another chance but we were only rewarded with our booked table "not showing up" in the book and we couldn't eat there :
Had a booking for a night out with a group of people. But unfortunatelly when we all got there the place was closed. Regardless we wanted to go back so we could use up a promotion we already payed for. The person in charge/manager/owner didn't want to book us in as they were not accepting this promotion anymore. Totally redicullous would never go back. As this was very dissapointing from loosing money, time and effort. I have been there several times a little while ago and was always really happy, all the lovely young girls were always very helpfull. Not very well managed unfortunatelly.
