I give 3 stars because the private hospital still got my relative's procedure properly performed and at no cost. My relative is a public patient but got transferred to the private hospital for the procedure when there was a spot. However, I am upset with their communication and management. Firstly, the day surgery refused to discharge my relative long after he recovered, i.e. awake enough to walk with my escort. I kept getting told that he would be ready to go soon, but it took 30 min and only happen when I told them we would miss out the taxi that I booked. You know, a procedure that normally takes 2 hours from start to finish took 5 hours! Secondly, they failed to tell me that they would send my relative back to the public hospital for follow up. The person who discharged my relative fooled me with the private hospital number and asked me to call and book the follow up appointment. I did, and someone hang up on me after I requested to book an appointment. I tried on the other day and got told to call another number. I called that number and got told to call another number again because my relative was not a private hospital. I asked her to please confirm that was the right number, and she called me unfriendly. Come on, you are playing me and you are not any more friendly! Look, we can definitely afford to go private, so there is no need to think less of us. In fact, the public hospital does a better job with day surgery. They mean it when they say the procedure takes 2 hours. They mean it when they say my relative is ready to go home. Moral of the story. If you have a clinically necessary procedure that needs to be performed in 3 months, please go to the public hospital. You will spare your money and the hassle at the private hospital.
I was referred to a specialist who only operates at Prince of Wales Private. The theatre staff and surgeon were fantastic but the post-op ward care from the nurses was almost non-existent. My surgery was done on the weekend and I think I had a succession of locum/ freelance nurses. I was left in agony the night after surgery and was told I couldn't be given any stronger painkillers as the anaesthetist had gone home for the night. I begged them to help me but was left alone with just a few paracetamol for pain. Other hospitals offer you heat packs or warm towels and when I asked if I could have one they said they were all used up in maternity. My bed sheets were left on the floor in a heap which the nurses just ignored the pain got so bad that I tripped over when I tried to get up to find someone to help me with the pain as noone answered the buzzer. My catheter was ripped out and I was left trailing the corridors at 3am screaming in pain. I made a complaint to the ward Nurse manager when I got the OK to go home. She apologised but the complaint was never followed up and I never heard anything else. I have only just felt able to write this review as the trauma was just too awful and I have suffered PTSD. Really not an experience one would expect from a private hospital in 2022.
I was thoroughly disappointed by my stay at POWP. I have never stayed in a private facility and was looking forward to giving birth there - assuming I would get far better care and attention than public. I was often not checked for OBs until late afternoon and my meds weren't always on time. I would have to chase the staff to ask questions, wasn't taught how to bottle feed just given notes to read, had to chase staff at 3pm to weigh bath my child on day 3 and was told they were busy and to come back after his next feed, my buzzer would always ring for a minimum of 15-20 mins when rung - which meant I avoided pressing it at times. I would sometimes look at the hallway and see other rooms light up - and they were also seen to before me. These are just a few of my many personal grievances. They then sent me a survey for feedback after I left and when I provided honest feedback they called me and told me that the perception that public was busier than them was a farce and that the private sector is far busier than public. I was also never given the new parents pack from NSW gov - they simply forgot - and after a few calls asking if they can post it to me I’d even cover the postage - as I’m not in the area- they simply refused and told me that it was up to me to come and collect it and they also never return calls when you ask them to call back. I chose private - with concerns that the public sector was under immense pressure particularly after covid but I felt far more neglected than I ever have in public. I have even since been in a public hospital and received far better care and attention. I have always felt very wall cared for in our public system and will continue using it. Turns out the best thing honestly about my stay at the POWP was the food. That was 5 stars - and the only thing I would recommend to people and not a hospital that seems to put profits ahead of patient care.
I had a wonderful experience with all of the midwives - especially Jess, Chinlee and Jin. The team continuously went above and beyond to assist and support my partner and I on this new journey with our baby. The breastfeeding class offered with lactation consultant Carolyn was SO beneficial, she was AMAZING. Very informative, and Carolyns nature automatically put me at ease and left me feeling empowered and confident. The team providing food services was also lovely. They were polite, helpful and always willing to help in any way. The facilities and resources provided were fantastic! There is a bathing area where you participate in a class with a midwife, pumping and breast feeding support around the clock, and just a genuine positive supportive demeanour from the team at any hour. My obstetrician Dr Stephen Horrowitz, my anaesthetist Dr Steven Katz and our paediatrician Dr Gary Williams were FANTASTIC. Dr Horrowitz is knowledgeable, caring, supportive and really takes the time to go above and beyond to help in any way shape or form at any given hour - we knew we were in great hands from the beginning. He also has a great sense of humour! Dr Horrowitz is extremely talented and a highly skilled doctor. He has a great demeanour, and uses direct and clear communication. He really encourages you to feel comfortable and ask as many questions as you need to. He will give you real advice and guide you based on your own individual needs. The birth could’ve went very badly although it went without a hitch due to Dr Horrowitz’s knowledge and experience - he kept us in the loop during the surgery which really put my partner and I at ease. The follow up was also very hands on and he has provided more support post surgery. Dr Horrowitz is very diligent and extremely observant! I didn't need much pain relief after surgery, and I was walking the day after my c-section. Within 5 days, I was already comfortable moving about and can see the cut is so clean and is healing well just a week later! I cannot recommend him enough! Dr Steven Katz is diligent, skilled, knowledgeable and kind. He is very thorough in his communication style and has a caring and supportive nature. He made me feel at complete ease from beginning to end, and during the follow up visits. Dr Katz is talented and experienced - highly recommend! Everyone in theatre for the surgery leading up to, during and post birth were great. It was a stress free, positive and seamless experience considering it could’ve went very badly given the positioning of bub. The staff in the birthing unit prior to delivery I had blood pressure complications were also amazing! In particular Anne, Natalia, Vicky and Matalena were FANTASTIC. I had full faith in everyone’s expertise and will most definitely be returning for baby number two when it’s time! A big thank you to all at POWP from my family and I!
Great experience having my first baby here. Midwives were incredible and I credit them with me successfully establishing breastfeeding. Memorably Pam breastfeeding and Aisling birth made all the difference to my experience. Rooms are comfortable, was moved to a larger room mid-stay upon request.
Is there another star should be. Guys you were fantastic. I come from a service industry and you were all amazing. From the time I arrived to check in for my Spinal Fusion the staff were informal and showed consideration. When I woke, the lovely people were not far away and explained things as each day went past. The stay was for 7days so a few others room mates came and went in that time. They updated their charts and it was a nice touch knowing who was looking after me from shift to shift. Learning the basics on walking, showering, moving again was a chalenge and with some patients I wasn't in a rush the help was always there. The food was AMAZING, I posted in on facebook and many of my friends who had had hospital stays were amazed aswell . To all the different people there, I just want to say thank you , you took a dificult time for me and made it so much better then I had hoped for. Your kindness and genuine concern was uplifting. I had surgery in February and stayed in the hospital for 2 days. I would like to express my genuine appreciation to Dr Kowalski and his team. All staff at the hospital were wonderful, specially nursing Steve provided me an excellent service. Thank you so much. Goodluck for all of them.
My daughter had day surgery this morning. The check in and discharge process was so efficient. The beautiful staff were so kind and caring in the Peads ward. Thank you!
Had a day surgery here. It’s was a straightforward process and all staff were amazing all the way through. Facilities are modern and clean. I’m glad I had my surgery there.
Spent 3 nights here after having a Laparoscopic excision of a liver cyst. This being the first time I had ever had surgery I was extremely nervous. Dr Robert Gandy, the members of the Theatre and 6 South Nursing Team went above and beyond to make me feel comfortable and at ease. I must say they were all very professional, kind and took great care of me. Thank you to you all. Excellent service provided by this amazing team at Prince of wales Private.
