Story

The Historic Port of Echuca precinct is an authentic working steam port, home to Australia’s largest fleet of steam-driven paddlesteamers.

Although its major commodity has changed from wool to people, Port of Echuca still operates much the same as it did in the 1860's, with our shipwrights and steam engineers providing a vital role in the Port's operations today, just as they would have in the late 1800's.

Great district to visit. Step back in time. See and experience the old world in modern comfort. Steam Trains, Horse & carriage, Paddle Steamers - all ready to experience.nCan get very busy. Bookings recommended on Peak Days
A great historical area focussed on the Murray River riverboats and related industries. Some of these industries are still practised here for tourists. Some good eating places and enough to fill in your day and go on a paddle boat cruise.
Fantastic experience The lady at front desk has so much knowledge about the history of the port and town. She gave our kids a special talk it was amazing for us all to hear.nA definite must visit and chat with Bec.nThank you very much.
Amazing experience.. was awesome to see and feel what it may have been like back in the day when the paddle steamers were running up. And down the Murray transporting cargo. So many different exhibitions with interactive sounds. We took an hour long ride up and down the Murray river. It was peaceful and well run. Highly recommend attraction.
The Port of Echuca Discovery Centre, located along the Murray River in Echuca, Victoria, offers an immersive look into Australia's river trade heritage. Once the country’s busiest inland port, Echuca served as a vital link between rural areas and major cities through the extensive Murray-Darling river system.nnVisitors can explore interactive exhibits that bring to life the era of paddle steamers and the booming timber trade. Key features include the restored Evans Brothers' sawmill, showcasing how red gum timber was processed, and a steam display with operational engines and pumps. The Echuca Wharf, built from local red gum, offers a tangible connection to 19th-century port life. Guided tours, often presented by staff in period costume, provide engaging historical stories, while cruises on historic paddle steamers like the PS Pevensey and PS Adelaide offer a firsthand experience of river travel. Open daily and welcoming to families, the centre blends education and entertainment, making it one of Victoria’s most memorable cultural attractions.
