I read a lot of good reviews here and wish that’s what my experience was like! We arrived in Swan Hill and entered the settlement at 2:30pm, when it’s closing time was 4:30pm.nnThe lady at ticketing asked us how long we were staying, we said just overnight and then after we bought tickets she said most of the shows won’t be running anymore this day.nnWe walked into the ghost town, didn’t see one person outside of someone doing a vintage car ride and he left to go home at 3pm.nnIf you’re open until 4:30pm, be open until 4:30pm!!!!!nnWe walked in, had a little look around and left after 15min. Huge waste of $30. The light show was great though in my review on the water, I recommend that at night.
What a great place to visit and learn about history. As someone else who wrote a review said though, the place is a bit tired and could do with a working bee. That is definitely the case. They spent millions on the new visitor centre where entry now is but the buildings and the paddle steamer could do with a clean up.nThe paddle steamer cruise was fantastic. I absolutely loved it. The food at the cafe was good. I loved the general store that sold lollies. However, the place is apparently run by volunteers and they are mostly elderly at that and there's a shortage, which meant a lot of the shops were open to inspect but had no staff in them telling you about it, which was a real shame. At least though you could go for a horse and carriage ride and an old car ride. Surely some of the money spent on the new entry could have been put towards hiring some staff to run the shops because it's a really great place to visit.nThe one thing they did get right though is the night laser and water show. That was absolutely brilliant and definitely worth going to.nOverall, I really loved Pioneer Settlement and the paddle steamer cruise and night show were the two highlights.
Pioneer Settlement in Swan Hill is an incredible attraction that brings history to life in the most engaging way. It’s like stepping back in time to the days of early settlers, with a full town setup featuring vintage boats, trucks, cars, horse-drawn carriages, and charming old-style shops. You can wander through the streets, step inside places like the chemist, barber, school, and many other recreated businesses to truly experience what life was like in the early 1900s.nnThe free horse cart rides are a great touch, and the guided tour in one of the classic legacy cars was especially enjoyable. In the evening, the Heartbeat of the Murray laser show is a must-see — it beautifully tells the story of the Murray River and how it shaped the region over time.nnThere’s truly something here for everyone, from kids to adults. Whether you’re into history, photography, or just looking for a relaxing and educational outing, Pioneer Settlement is a top highlight in Swan Hill. Highly recommended for all visitors!
An absolutely fantastic place to wander around and reminisce about yesteryear. Ride the Paddle Steamer or take a vintage car ride around the whole village. Handily attached to the brand new visitor information centre who will happily guide you through entry to the village or chat to you about everything else Swan Hill has to offer.
Thank you to the staff who made my two children's experience wonderful. Mr 8 wanted to stay at the caravan park with his new holiday friends, but once we got him to the Settlement he had a great time!nnThanks to Jack for helping my children make a skipping rope, to Ian for the vintage car ride and the lovely gentleman sorry we didn't catch your name for letting my kids 'steer' the horse + cart as well as taking our photos.nnWe loved the 2 day re-entry which meant we could come back the following day to explore things we missed the first time around and to have any horse cart ride.nnThe River Lights at night was brilliant. We purchased the laser light show & PS Pyap ride, all were a big hit, as was the free glow in the dark face paint. The snow machine, lights and music down the main street of the settlement created a little bit of magic for our little ones too.nnMy only suggestion would be making the booking process easier. I first purchased River Lights tickets & Pyap ride not realising this didn't include the Pioneer Settlement day tickets. I then paid more to get tickets for the night laser show as I don't believe this was part of the River Lights experience!? I probably ended up paying twice...but I'm really not sure. It was just a bit confusing... Perhaps two different companies were running slightly different events!?
