Story

Newcastle Art Gallery has a major art collection - one of Australia's most substantial public collections outside the capital cities. It’s no surprise, since Newcastle’s reputation as a centre for arts and culture - once one of Australia’s best kept secrets - is now fast becoming a well known fact.

The Gallery hosts around 17 exhibitions annually. Exhibitions draw on the Gallery's collection, as well as public and private collections of national and international importance. We also run a full program of events including art workshops, guided tours, film screenings, lectures, seminars and more.

Drop by for a visit. We’re across from Civic Park, next to Newcastle Region Library, and only a few minutes walk from the Darby Street café and shopping precinct, and the harbour-side development at Honeysuckle.

By Bus
Stops for various routes operate on King Street, Darby Street, and Hunter Street. Visit 131500.com.au for details.

Parking
Limited on-street parking with time limits and paid ticketing systems operate in the Civic Park and Cooks Hill area. Laman St provides 30 minute free parking spots, 2 hour free parking is available on Dawson St, and all-day paid parking is available in the car park at the rear of the Gallery, accessible via Queen St.

10:00am - 5:00pm
Tuesday to Sun
Closed Mondays, and most public holidays.

Most of our exhibitions are free of charge, but some special exhibitions have an entry fee. We also provide a great range of public events you can get involved with - many of them are free also.
