We visited at 10:30 on a Thursday for the Pharaoh event. I recommend booking.nnThere was a cloakroom, which was much appreciated.nnThere was heavy crowd just as we entered, but this thinned out as we went through the exhibit. The exhibit was brilliantly staged, capturing the different times of day and moods in the lighting and layout. The items were very well displayed and described, with a feeling of space between them.nnThe artefacts themselves were quite humbling - that they have been around for so long. They were grouped and laced to keep out interest. Some plaques were translated for kids, which was a lovely thought.nnWe very much enjoyed this experience. It wasn’t expansive and gave us a few hours of enjoyment, also adding to our knowledge along the way.
The National Gallery of Victoria is an absolute must-visit for art lovers! With a vast collection of famous paintings and artworks from around the world, you can easily spend an entire day exploring the exhibits. From classical to contemporary pieces, there’s something to suit every taste. The gallery is beautifully laid out, making it easy to navigate and appreciate the art. The architecture and design of the building itself are impressive too. Whether you're a casual visitor or a seasoned art enthusiast, NGV offers an enriching and inspiring experience.
Sunday afternoon visit on a weekend away in Melbourne. Free entry and we spent about 3 hours which was plenty to have a good look around. Friendly staff, cafe, restaurant and clean toilets. Whilst there is plenty of paintings there is also furniture pieces, crockery, silverware, homewares and other interesting pieces. Reminded us of the Huntington library art museum. We really enjoyed our time and would definitely recommend.
National Gallery of Victoria is located in the heart of Melbourne. Short walk from Flinders St station and tram ways. Free entrance however events and special showcases fees apply.nnIt is a multi level building with multiple access from walking ramps, lifts and escalators. This is heavily guarded area to make sure the artworks are preserved. Very organised as arts are clustered by the eras they were created.nnVery interesting creations that made me remember my uni days being fine arts. Gosh! Vaguely remember some of them since my path became hazy and swerved to a different field.nnThere is a garden and open area where you can set up picnic mats and snacks available within the building and outside.nnWe went there during week and it was quite busy and I imagine it could be busier during weekend.nnKids may be allowed depending on the show and pets are not allowed.
Pharoah exhibition was great. Also bought ticket to African Fashion I needed lots more time to take it all in so recommend get there early. I'll be going back next year to see all the other fabulous exhibits.nBuy tickets in advance if you are going to a ticketed exhibition. Otherwise entry if free.
