Gorgeous place and must visit when in Melbourne. Many exhibitions available. Allow at least 2hours if you want to take it all in and enjoy every single piece. A few areas closed due to setting up for upcoming exhibitions. Two cafes on site. A nice gift souvenir shop at exit point. There is a lift available. Toilets are nice and clean. They also have bag storage which I assume you have to pay for. It does get busy with all the school excursions. Lots of Parking underground but very expensive!! Friendly and helpful staff.
The National Gallery of Victoria has impressive collection of artworks ranging from classical to contemporary. The architecture is stunning, and the exhibits are thoughtfully curated. The iconic water wall at the entrance adds to the charm. A great place to spend a few hours exploring culture and creativity.
This art gallery has a little bit of everything, from centuries-old paintings, to sculptures by Rodin, to video, to furniture and ceramics and dresses and more. That all of this is free is amazing!nnTickets are required for special exhibits like the current one by Kusama, which is worth every cent.nnThe cafe is a little pricey but had a modest selection of sandwiches and salads with multiple vegetarian options.
Visited on foot on a Friday afternoon after landing in Melbourne a recommended destination for those staving off effects of jet lag. A world-class museum, I particularly enjoyed the impressionist pieces in the collection.nnI was especially taken by the architecture of the gallery—the main spaces were filled with light and the even choice of wall and floor materials made for lovely shadows and textures. Almost as compelling as the pieces on display!nnVery focused on Western art, there were a few works I could find by Australian artists and even fewer by indigenous artists. That seems like a gap.
We visited at 10:30 on a Thursday for the Pharaoh event. I recommend booking.nnThere was a cloakroom, which was much appreciated.nnThere was heavy crowd just as we entered, but this thinned out as we went through the exhibit. The exhibit was brilliantly staged, capturing the different times of day and moods in the lighting and layout. The items were very well displayed and described, with a feeling of space between them.nnThe artefacts themselves were quite humbling - that they have been around for so long. They were grouped and laced to keep out interest. Some plaques were translated for kids, which was a lovely thought.nnWe very much enjoyed this experience. It wasn’t expansive and gave us a few hours of enjoyment, also adding to our knowledge along the way.
