A very good use of an afternoon wandering around this very well laid out gallery housing free viewing of 16th-20th century art. It also includes some furniture, ceramics and sculptures and an impressive display of iconic 1960s fashion.nEating options range from a quick snack to afternoon tea and restaurant dining.nA deservedly popular attraction.
The NGV is definitely a must-visit when you’re in Melbourne. The variety of art on display is incredible — from classic works to contemporary installations, Indigenous pieces, and international exhibitions. Every room offers something unique, and you can easily spend hours exploring without getting bored.nnWhat I loved most was how thoughtfully everything was curated. The exhibitions had a clear flow, the descriptions were informative, and the overall vibe was calm and inspiring. The gallery space itself is also stunning — spacious, clean, and easy to access by public transport.nnThat said, it can get very crowded during major exhibitions. Some parts felt rushed or hard to fully enjoy because of the number of people. Also, the layout can be a bit confusing at times, especially when transitioning between different sections or locations. A few visitors seemed frustrated by early room closures or long queues for ticketed exhibits.nnStill, the positives definitely outweigh the negatives. NGV offers a rich cultural experience and is a gem for both locals and tourists. Just try to visit on a weekday or earlier in the day to avoid the peak rush!
National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne: World-class NGV is Australia’s best and one of the world’s best. I’m a “New York The Metropolitian Museum Every Friday serialist” while I lived in The Big Apple – the collection there is baffling, staggering and indulgent. NGV is serves up a hearty appetizer of that. It’s housed in a gorgeous dark and brooding architecture, and the artwork begins as sculptures before you step in. Kusama greets you in the most whimsical manner when you get to the lobby. The most contemporary art starts from the top – pop art, modern surrealism and the fashionable darling Christian Dior couture collection is elegant and timeless. Timeline your way down to the renaissance, dark realism, European art and Asian pieces as you make your way down. #eatstylishtravelstylishnnChristian Dior Collection, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne: Once the most revered fashion couture in the world – with the most gifted, visionary designers, fashion and textile craftsmen in the house of CD. Today CD is accessible to the wannabes, tasteless and gaudy pedestrians. This yesteryear haute collection brings back the limited, coveted and exclusivity the House of CD offers.
While special exhibitions require a fee, floors 1 through 4 are completely free and house an excellent collection. It's a shame they only operate until 5 PM. I recommend setting aside at least 3 to 4 hours for your visit. The Kusama artwork on the ground floor is truly overwhelming
I recently visited the National Gallery of Victoria and absolutely loved it! The art collection is diverse and beautifully presented, combining Australian, Indigenous, and international works. The building itself is stunning, and the staff were friendly and helpful. Entry to the main exhibits is free, which makes it even better. A must-visit spot in Melbourne for art and culture lovers!
