A very nice, large and spacious Museum, and free! Free is about the only way you will get me into in art gallery, but this one actually held my attention for almost an hour primarily because of the very nice Aboriginal / First peoples art displays.
We went there to check out the Ouroboros which was great, but we ended up going into the gallery also. We were very impressed with the scope and variety of artworks on display. A return trip will be required as we did not have time to see everything. Free entry was a bonus
There are lots of art pieces to look at, and one could easily spend a whole day to go through in detail. We spent around 2 hours and were fairly fast in going through the different displays. Monet’s water lilies was definitely a highlight.nnThere are also outdoor pieces of sculptures and buildings to check out. Also a free concert took place on the day of visit
We visited the National Gallery on the weekend. Plenty of free parking near by. The National Gallery is always worth seeing. You are permitted to take photos but no flash.nI'm not really into art but I did find it interesting. There are works on display by Claude Monet, Sidney Nolan and Jackson Pollock.nBefore entering the Gallery, you should visit the Sculpture Garden which is located adjacent to the building. The fog sculpture was interesting.nEntry to the National Gallery of Australia is free. However they do have an online booking service and on occasion there are special events that you have to pay for.
Absolutely one of my favourite places to visit when in Canberra. Brilliant Gaugin exhibition, and always love the Indigenous works. Great to see 25 of the 27 Sidney Nolan Ned Kelly series too. Prefer the Aboriginal Northern Australia totems in the front space: way more open and light filled. Shame they're turning this lovely art space into a restaurant. 4.5 stars out of 5.
