National Anzac Centre

Story

Opened on the 1st of November 2014 by the Prime Ministers of Australia and New Zealand, The National Anzac Centre is an award-winning facility that uses multimedia, interactive technology and historical artefacts to create a deeply personal connection with the past, as well as pay tribute to those who served. The interpretive content that forms part of the interactive experience was developed by the Western Australian Museum and the Australian War Memorial and is delivered via a series of interactive visual and audible displays. The experience is known for commemorating the war through the stories of the ANZACs as opposed to telling its own story via pro-war or anti-war sentiments.

The centre combines traditional museum display and exhibition techniques with highly interactive, multi-media content. To navigate and interpret this content visitors assume the identity of one of 32 actual service men or women, and follow their experience of the Great War: from recruitment, through training and embarkation, ship-board life on the convoys, the conflicts at Gallipoli, the middle east and the Western Front and for those lucky enough to survive, their return home and the difficulties they faced adjusting back into normal society.

In 2016 the National Anzac Centre was named Number 1 Museum in Australia by TripAdvisor.

The National Anzac Centre is open every day of the year (except Christmas Day) between 9am and 5pm with last entry at 4pm. It is recommended to allow at least 2 hours for the experience.

This is well worth a visit. Extensive historical information that we found extremely interesting. They have some very detailed displays. If you're not into war history the views of surrounding Albany are captivating enough to enjoy the visit. Put this on your list if you're in the area. Just make sure you have some gold coins for the viewing binoculars; the rest is free.

A tranquil homage to a terrible war. You enter the museum and you are given a photo and a name which you can place on some interactive pillars as you walk through which tells you more about that person. You also receive an audio pen which will pick up on some tags, draw around the A stickers and you'll be given a story based on what you are looking at. A really interesting and well executed museum, the kids never enjoyed the insight through the interaction and made it ready to spend over an hour reading and listening to the stories.

Excellent exhibition with state of the art digital interactive display. The talking scanner pen is quite a surprise, never seen one in any exhibition in Western Australia. The use of 'digital' card is also a unique experience that brought the characters alive. My children were so fascinated with the exhibition and spent a long time inside the centre. There is also a BBQ place outside and plenty of galleries to explore. The view is ao amazing, especially in the afternoon. A must to visit place in Albany.

Looks small from the outside but is very well set up with some outstanding exhibits. The journey through could be more clearly signposted by date; I did some elements out of order, but this didn't really detract. The focus on personal stories is a brilliant way to make this part of our history feel real. Best for 11+

Brilliant for any history buffs. Obviously some extremely sad and sobering stories but the actual facilities are great. Love the modern feel and interactive boards and info. Make sure you walk up to see the Convoy Lookout too so you can exactly where all the ships left from.
