The most extraordinary beach with large spherical boulders along the beach! Moeraki Boulders Beach is a must-visit and there is ample parking space for visitors. The beach is just walking distance down the stairs from the car park and there is a restaurant near the entrance of the beach. This beach is a perfect place for a photo shoot and it was interesting to see the different sizes of boulders lying around the beach. A beautiful place in New Zealand!
The boulders looked more like regular rocks and we would have not have noticed them if it was not hyped up. That said, managed to see one of the untouched fully round boulders still in a cliff and only then did we appreciate it for what it was. Parking is free if you park at the public parka slightly longer walk as opposed to the cafe where there is fee charged as it is privately owned.
On a tour of the South Island, we ran across a sign for the Moeraki Boulders Beach. I had recognized the name from a postcard I had spotted in a shop in Dunedin. Not knowing what to expect, we pulled in for a look. The beach was incredible, and the spherical rock formations look like artifacts from another planet! The beach is spacious and teeming with wildlife. Not too crowded with people, although we visited in winter and summer crowds might be thicker. There's a small restaurant on the bluff above the beach. A boardwalk and stairs take you down from the restaurant to the beach itself. Moeraki Boulders Beach is pretty incredible; you'd be hard-pressed to find anything else like it in your world travels.
Love this place! Donate $2 pp at the beginning of the walk by the cafe / gift shop entrance. A short 3 min walk to see the boulders. Make sure you go to see the boulders at low tide. Plenty of car park available.
Ā very special and spiritual place. Sad to see tourists clamouring over the rocks for photo taking. There was nothing to encourage respecting the significance for Maori. The walk to the boulders requires some degree of sure footedness and fitness.
Cool place to stop if you’re passing by ! It would be a great spot to watch the sunrise. There is a cute gift shop and cafe if you turn left or if you turn right you can go to the public parking lot and walk down the beach to the boulders without going on the cafe’s private walk way. The beach around there is nice if you want to spend some extra time there.
A different beach with some wierd looking round stones which i found amusing. TBH,I was expecting to see a lot after reading about it and felt a bit disappointed as these rocks are few and don't span a major portion of the beach. Main reason for my 3 stars is the lack of any public bathrooms in the area. Just need to be a bit careful on the rocks as its slippery I would still recommend this cos its unique.
Finally got to see the Moeraki Boulders on a very windy cold wintery day. Would've been more pleasant on a sunny clear day, but great to be there. It is about a 5-10min walk from the beach carpark along the beach. The boulders are an incredible natural phenomenon. However, I was very disappointed that there was no sign or plaque at the boulder site to inform visitors about the boulders i.e. how they were formed, how big they are, how old they are - just the usual interesting facts you'd see at any other place of interest in NZ. But there was nothing. Not even at the carpark or up the cliff by the cafe. Very surprising! Unfortunately, Covid must've affected the cafe and gift shop business at the top of cliff because it had closed down.
Always a great inexpensive place to visit with friends and family. Enjoy something tasty off the menu before you walk it off with a stroll to see the boulders. You need a low tide to see the boulders and the amount of Boulders visible depends on whether the tide has covered or uncovered them. Gift shop available and you can buy food to feed the deer and alpacas.
Great beach for walking in shoes. Used an old toothbrush to remove sand before getting back in car walking on damp grass and banging shoes together wasn't enough to get the sand off
