Great menu. Food was delicious. Staff were friendly and helpful. We’re not a fan of stool seating. Most of the tables were high with stools to sit on. There were a few tables with chairs and two booths. We’ll try to get one of the booths next time. They had a DJ on the balcony which added to an already loud environment.
It was my second time at Midnight Shanghai and I can say for sure now it is currently my favourite Christchurch restaurant. The food is amazing, the price is fair, the staff is lovely, and knows how to provide good service without being too much. It is also located inside the beautiful Riverside Market, which is another big plus. The atmosphere inside the restaurant itself is also great. I love the outside area, just perfect for a drink and getting a bunch of sharing plates. Looking forward to my next visit!
VERY POOR table management. I've made reservation for 8pm. The party arrived on time but we were told that our table is not yet available. We waited for 20mins for our table and while waiting, we decided to order in advance so we won't be waiting again. We got some of our food at 8:45pm and the rest at almost 9pm. Not happy with the way things turned out but the food was still very good. The beef short ribs was amazing. Full of flavor and just slid off the bone. The soft shell crabs were a bit salty but still very nice.
My friend and I ate here for late lunch today. While the atmosphere and location were good, the food not so much. When I ordered fries, I expected fries, not some duck fat powder or whatever that horrid product you covered my fries with. It coated my mouth and teeth with a tasteless sticky goo which I thought initially was seasoning, but instead ruined my palate. Don't trust the chef.
We shared the "Trust the Chef" menu and it was utterly incredible. The flavours and presentation were phenomenal. We have ate in a LOT of different asian restaurants, including some very expensive/fancy ones back in the UK but the food here was miles better than any we have had anywhere else. We got chicken wontons, three types of dumpling, fried satay chicken, lamb stir fry which was utterly incredible! Which was accompanied by rice and stir fried veg which was perfectly cooked and seasoned!, Finished with cheesecake. Then we went upstairs for an hour if karaoke and cocktails. Utterly incredible meal from start to finish and the team were so helpful and fantastic. I'm so sad we are only here on holiday as i would love to return!
Exquisite location and ambiance, very friendly service staffs, the food is good. We would have enjoyed our meal a bit better if our “trust the chef” courses were more dim sum oriented, at the end of the day, the two of us spent around $140 not adding the drinks, not sure if it lived up to this price.
A delicious time at Midnight Shanghai! I was pleasantly surprised by how strong the dishes were across the board. We had the xiaolongbao, chilli oil wontons, sichuan mapo tofu, Wok fried market greens, beef chow fun, and the sticky beef short ribs. Don't expect the food to be very traditional, as it isn't, but it's very tasty! My standards were the greens, tofu, and short ribs. The weakest dish was definitely the xiaolongbao, not a great rendition. Service was attentive and polite but not overbearing. Their cocktails were also very good and a fun accompaniment to the food. I would absolutely recommend visiting.
Midnight Shanghai is our favourite place for special occasions, but it is perfect for any occasion! Excellent food, staff and atmosphere. Whether you want to have an afternoon high tea, a romantic dinner with your significant other, catch up with friends or spend time with family, Midnight Shanghai is the perfect place. The portion size and range of yum cha dishes is great for sharing with others or just trying a few new things yourself. I also highly recommend doing the trust the chef menu, we did one for the Chinese New Year, and it was one of the best meals of my life. Keep up the fantastic work team!
The place was lovely and all the waiting staffs were friendly. However, we did not enjoy the food at all. Kung Pao Chicken - Not all chicken dishes can be called Kung Pao Chicken! Clearly the chef misunderstood the definition of “Kung Pao” and confused it with “Yu Xiang”Fish flavour. It’s not Kung Pao Chicken at all! Fried Eggplant - This dish was just too salty to eat. If you’re looking for authentic Chinese food, this restaurant might be a bad idea.
Had a really great dinner last night. I love the margaritas here, so good! I also had the cocktail special *clover heart* which was good but quite sweet, 1 was plenty. To eat we had; Scallion pancake- so crispy. Chicken peanut wontons- the freshest crispiest wontons I’ve had for a long time and the peanut sauce was delicious. My top dish of the night. Maple sriracha chicken bao- this again was one of the freshest bao I’ve had in ages, the chicken was so soft and tender but also crispy on the outside. My partners dish of the night. Crispy pork belly- soft and moist with crispy chunky crackle with a beautiful tomato dip. Kong pao chicken and rice: yum! Staff were super friendly and helpful too. Can’t wait to come back.
