Mentone Girls' Grammar School

About

Mentone Girls' Grammar School is an independent girls school from Kindergarten to Year 12.

Story

Mentone Girls’ Grammar School is one of the finest schools in Melbourne - with classes from Kindergarten to Year 12. We welcome students of all talents and abilities and pride ourselves on being culturally diverse - our student population boasts many faiths and cultures.

We believe every child is remarkable in their own way, and as such we value each individual and work to foster self confidence and achievement.

The unique beachfront location has inspired the school’s WAVES priorities — key principles which guide the way we meet the particular learning needs of girls by contributing to their Wellbeing, Achievement, positive Values, Enterprising nature and Success as women in our society. WAVES underpins all that we do, and promotes creativity to nurture ideas and develop quality thinking from Maths and Science to all forms of artistic expression. We encourage boldness, enterprise and intellectual risk-taking in all areas of teaching, learning and life.

We have a wonderful phrase at our School, which is simply Mentone Girls. Remarkable Women. This statement has become a powerful message of pride and encouragement for our students and community. With such a clear sense of who we are, it is no surprise that every year our VCE students feature among the State’s best, and the class of 2010 has continued this strong tradition of academic success, and university entry. Quality teaching, small classes, an inspired curriculum, personal development programs, and purpose built learning centres, ensure that Mentone Girls’ Grammar School is consistently ranked amongst the top schools in Melbourne. Our students regularly win prizes for academic, sporting and artistic endeavour.

Mentone girls are encouraged to remain open to new ideas so they can identify and conquer the challenges of the future. They are encouraged to be leaders and life-long learners, to aspire to excellence, and make a real difference to the people and environment around them. That’s why Mentone girls become remarkable women; women who make a difference in their community and the global community; women who get the most out of life.

Mission

At Mentone Girls’ Grammar School, we are dedicated to excellence in the education of girls. Excellence includes, but reaches well beyond, superb preparation for tertiary studies. The true mission of our school is preparing our students to aspire to excellence, to make a difference and, as global citizens, to rise boldly to the challenges of their times.

We are committed to providing a challenging, supportive and personalised learning environment, based on our Christian heritage which values the worth and uniqueness of each person. We dedicate ourselves to inspiring in each girl an abiding passion for learning, preparing her to become a confident, creative and articulate woman who has the skills, knowledge, values and attitudes to shape her future, lead with wisdom and compassion and contribute meaningfully to the international community.

Mentone Girls’ Grammar School also embraces broader aspirations as well: to continue to stand out among the country’s leading schools, to be appreciated as an active contributor in our local community and to support the wellbeing, achievement, positive values, enterprising nature and success of women in our society.

Reviews
I agree with their most recent, and most liked review. I understand that people have different opinions, but these are my personal experiences.nnBy the Oxford dictionary's definition of 'bullied', I was bullied by a student and a teacher during my time at this school too. I was too scared to tell anyone about my experience with the teacher, so my parents told the former head of year twice. However, the former head of year would tell me to give her another chance and that 'she thinks we would get along well' which made me feel invalidated and sad... considering that this teacher made me cry after almost every lesson and I would be happy for the few lessons when I didn't cry after. Writing this just made me remember when we had to film a video assignment, and I filmed it after her class and my eyes were puffy from the tears.nnBut a positive was that they had counselling services so that helped with the terrible experiences. I caught up with a friend from this school recently and she told me she remembered when I said I went to counselling because of that teacher. I used to wish I would never wake up again because of the things that happened to me during this time.nnAlso, when I wrote a complaint about classroom bullying damaging other students' property, stealing of items from peoples' locker, unwanted verbal and physical interactions etc. for my former homeroom teacher FHT, FHT said that they would send it to the head of year and higher ups. However, towards the end of the year when another student also had enough, I found out that the higher ups never even knew about it because FHT never even sent it to them. Which sucks because it took a lot of courage to even write & send that.nnIt feels like the bullying is swept under the rug... However, there have been times when the school have dealt with it well and rung the other party's parents up. It didn't stop the bad behaviour, but it was alright for that time.nnI haven't even talked about the worst thing yet but that's too... emotional to type up.nnNow onto the positives:nThey have a good music program. They encourage their students to join the music and sports programs. I think that musical students can thrive at this school in regards to their musical life alone.nnThey also have good facilities compared to public schools for obvious reasons. I believe that the majority of teachers care about their students and the wellbeing of their students. Of course one teacher doesn't define the whole school, but it was just a terrible experience with that teacher overall which I still think about.nnThey also have free homework help/tutoring after school and within school hours. The students university students were really nice and caring. Their library was also really nice and was a productive place to get work done. I also made some good friends at this school and there were some really smart people there whom I respect a lot.nnThey have many good programs which are amazing and some of those changed my life a lot for the better. Some other schools don't offer those programs and considering that this is a private school, there are WAY more opportunities to thrive in new things/what you love.nnI've had many great experiences at this school and made genuine connections here which I'm grateful about. Some of these amazing opportunities and experiences even completely changed my life for the better. However, the great things don't outbalance the negative experiences I've had there which made me want to end my existence.nnIf you are a parent wanting to find a good school for your child, make sure you ask your child about their feelings. Not just what other parents think or what the rankings on paper are.
Amazing school with great facilities just a small problem, there isn’t enough extension programs but apart from that this is a great school to send your daughter to
Great school with facilities that cater for all. This review is for a second language school there which Mentone Girls provides classes for. A great partnership
