Story

One of Australia’s most historically significant cemeteries, Melbourne General Cemetery is characterised by it’s notable interments, heritage listed Gate House, Prime Ministers Garden and Saint Mary of the Cross mausoleum.

Established in 1852, Melbourne General Cemetery is one of eight cemeteries within the care of the Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (SMCT) and is SMCT’s oldest cemetery.

The striking grounds, designed like a large public park, span 43 hectares (106 acres) and feature many historic and ornate monuments.

Well maintained site. This grave yard has the largest momorial to Elvis and has quite a number of graves that date back over a hundred years.

One of Melbourne's oldest cemeteries. Unusually for a cemetary it is located very close to the city centre.. surrounded by parks and the University of Melbourne. Sections for various religions and cultures. Tall iron metal frencxe around its perimeter. Great place to search for historical facts and gives you a good sense of how differeing cultures remember the deceased.

I adore walking through this place of the dead I particularly adore the Jewish section with so very many expressions of love. I look forward to a nighttime visit soon

Always a special place for those of us with family buried here and I have a few generations so I visit every time I come to Melbourne, kept beautifully clean too.

A deathly quiet place to be alone with your thoughts and have a nice walk. There are graves ranging in area of religion, and ethnicity dating as far back as the mid 1800's to as recent as last year, creepy but beautiful
