Australia's Greatest Polar Explorer Sir. Douglas Mawson he who led two major expeditions to the Antarctica in 1911-1914 & 1929-1931. His legacy includes Australia's territorial claim to 42% of ANTARCTICA and the Australian Antarctic Division which operates three scientific & research bases on the white continent & one on Macquarie Island. He had originally been trained as a mining engineer and then, as a geologist at the University of Sydney. Mawson selected Hobart as this place has sheltered habour, ample provisions and it's closest port to East Antarctica. Today the Mawson's Huts replica museum is on waterfront in Hobart.
