Went to try as Google reviews gave good words on this trattoria. Ordered Gnocchi and Fetuccini. I asked for recommended sauce to go with the Gnocchi and I loved it, Gnocchi was soft, sauce was tasty and thick but not too filling. Portion is very generous too. Even the garlic bread is so good!! And thank you for your great hospitality :
Great local Italian! We have been here every month for years, everything on the menu is great. The specials are always worth trying abs the flagship spaghetti meatballs are fantastic!!!
NO FRILLS WHOLESOME ITALIAN FARE Maria's Trattoria is an unassuming restaurant on Peel Street - just down from the Victoria St corner. It's not fancy - i.e. you wont get linen tablecloths, polished wait staff or a stunning interior decor - BUT it is genuinely good Italian food : The wait staff two of them ranged from super-friendly and attentive to a little bit grumpy arent we all though some days?. It is very popular with the older European crowd but increasingly is being discovered by others. The primary focus is pasta but the menu also tempts you with a range of meat dishes. The dining room is actually two rooms spliced together. For some reason one is much more brightly lit than the other. so if you are after a softer ambience, choose the room on the right as you enter. Parking in the area can be ferocious at times as it is adjacent to the Queen Victoria Market and many parking bays are metered for a max of 1 hour. Be prepared to park a block or so away on a side street. Alternatively the Route 58 tram runs right past the door and Victoria Street trams are at the next corner. Licenced with a small but decent range of beers and wines and BYO. Food servings are quite generous. People with mobility issues will be fine in the dining room but may struggle a little negotiating their way to the toilets at the back of the building as there are several doors and small steps along the way.
I went with my boyfriend hoping to eat a good pasta, attention a bit dry, if I make myself understood with dry. and the food is nothing you can't do and call it Italian food. I was expecting too much maybe, but really nothing out of the ordinary.
A genuine family restaurant, like how Nonna cooks you dishes. This place is very popular among the locals, nothing fancy so don't expect a fine dining experience. The staff are very humble and friendly. I had the gnocchi with bolognese by myself: tasted exactly like my Italian godmother's with her home made gnocchi and tomato sauce. Dishes in the "Special" were decent. The portion is huge and the place allows food to be taken away. Wine selection was good! Overall, I like this place, and appreciate that this family restaurant survives the pandemic. The smiles from the staff made my day!

All the reviews are spot on .... this was one of the best meals I've had. Simple, tasty and satisfying. Portions are generous, just as any Italian or Greek meal should Must try!! The decor is basic but ambience is warm. Warmth is amplified by the smiles on the staff's face.
A small group of us went there recently and the food was terrific as on all occasions i have been. Service is always very good ! honest good quality simple Italian food at its best. plus well priced .
We visited Maria's Trattoria for many many times, all thanks to our friend who recommended it to us! Now, we are addicted to it The pasta sauce is very authentic but not too heavy! We ordered large playe per person and we managed to finish it all as it's too good to stop eating No more words needed as we will definitely come back again again and again! Vegetarian options: Good choices of vegetarian options!!
Traditional Italian food - same as Nona’s food. You will not find better in Melbourne, in my top two for Australia and equal first. Do yourself a favour and head to Marisa’s Trattoria for dinner today!
