Story

Malthouse Theatre is contemporary, boundary-pushing theatre.

We collaborate with local and international artists to create work that puts provocative, entertaining and authentic human experiences on stage. We champion artistic and cultural diversity; we advocate for alternative points of view. We are the voice of the other.

The theatre we produce explores Melbourne and Australia, personally, socially and politically. We cultivate Australian talent and curate irreverent, courageous theatrical experiences from around the globe to captivate audiences. We believe theatre can be—and should be—an agent of change.

We are curious. We are rebellious. We are alive.

Welcome to Malthouse Theatre.

The Malthouse has improved so much!!nFantastic Aperitivo hour. $5 schooners and free food.nSuch a lovely vibe and gorgeous setting all year round.
The staff were very helpful and the Theatre was beautiful. Easily retrieved tickets from the box office and there was plenty of seating while we waited for the show.
Lovely heritage-listed, red brick, theatrical venue. Comprising of 3 seperate theatres with varying capacities from 500 seats over multiple levels to a intimate 100 seat black box room.nDistinctive 1st floor RED toilets with ample facilities and an accessible downstairs toilet and a bar, cafe and relaxing outdoor seating area. Showcasing local theatre, comedy and music performances.
If your into performance and theatre, this is an experience you definitely don’t want to miss out on. Something so incredibly different and innovative you wouldn’t have seen before.nBecause The Night is a theatre show loosely based on Hamlet, however instead of the actors performing traditionally on a stage, they perform alongside you in rooms, where you are able to explore, walk through and watch at your own leisure. You cannot touch the actors and they cannot touch you, they simply perform like you aren’t there. Different scenes are performed at the same time, and you start by entering either the Gymnasium, Bedroom or Office chosen at time of booking.nNo phones or bags are allowed in, so the inside remains a mystery to you. You are given a mask and a cape to wear, and you must remain silent as you explore the rooms. We were astonished by how many rooms there actually were, we didn’t even get to see them all in the 90 minutes. We seemed to be fish out of water and a little confused as what we were meant to be doing, my advise is to follow the actors, and not delve too much into each room looking for answers to the story as we did. Enjoy the show, we highly recommend it!nTickets can be purchased from the Malthouse Theatre website and were $120pp. Only 60 audience members per show.
Attended a play here recently. It's a lovely restored old building in Melbourne's Southbank area. I was using public transport and it was easy to get to. Very nice 15 minute walk from Flinders Street station. It's a small theatre, so productions here have a very intimate feel. There is a nice bar area to have a pre show drink.
