Super kind staff, comfortable beds and the location is absolutely golden! Everything is within walking distance and there are buses just about everywhere right across the street. No towels and not a lot of bathrooms/showers but never had to wait more than 5 min. Fantastic common area and overall great vibes. Recommended for backpackers and travelers for sure!
My favourite hostel in Sydney so far. The location is amazing, just a moments walk from the beach. The hostel is really social and it was easy to make friends. The staff are very accommodating, especially Tia & Ariana who were always on hand to help. 10/10 would recommend
My stay here was really good, the location is 10/10 and the staff were very kind and helpful! It was really easy to make friends too as it’s a very social hostel. Would definitely recommend!
As with any travel and hostel experience, it’s really the people that make or break it. So naturally, there’s something to be said for a space that’s set up and designed to facilitate community. Mad Monkey is such a place where, not only in physical design, but also in the friendly approach of staff, offers a space for true connection and fun.nnWhat was intended to be a two night visit, turned into a 2.5 week stay. This is often the case for travelers who visit here. Who knows if it’s the 30 second walk from the beach or the McDonald’s that’s directly below us, or maybe the staff who feel like siblings, but it is my favorite hostel I’ve stayed at in Australia. I’ve also made some of the best friends yet during my Working Holiday visa.nnHonorable mentions to the staff members Tom, Mathias, Tia, and Ariana. All of whom also became friends by the end of my stay, and showed true curiosity and concern for me day-to-day.nnIn-depth review below:nnAfter a lovely, panting crawl, up four flights of steps, you reach the common space area where all the magic happens. This large room is the combined reception desk, kitchen, tv lounging spot, and beach-view balcony. When you check in, you’re bound or perhaps forced to meet the varying local and international travelers cramped around the kitchen or tv space.nnThe kitchen, equipped with nearly everything you’d need, is cleaned 3 times daily, and inhabits true artisans of backpacker-gourmet and family style meals. You may find there’s always some crumbs leftover from a recent made toasty, or that there are never the perfect sized bowls for your dish. Along with the ever-elusive cutlery, it at times can be a bit “grunge,” but nevertheless this is no doubt the charm of a space which allows for freedom and a family-feel.nnAt night, the large dinner/game table is often flowing with goon, energized with competitive card games, and grounded by awkward yet friendly introductions and job hunts.nnBeyond the common space: the rooms and the bathrooms. The hostel offers a small set of lockers available for purchase on the top floor, however most people don’t use them and instead use the provided space under the beds and around the room. This tends to cram things and make it harder to ambulate, it also insists on dust accumulation in hard to reach places. The rooms are, however, vacuumed as best as they can be once a day. The bathrooms are also cleaned once a day, there are two toilets and two showers per floor. The apartments have their own single shower and toilet. Not the tidiest of hostels, but definitely the beachiest and most well lived-in. This is a plus for my personal taste. It doesn’t seem to bother me or any of the guests.nnWe’re also close to CBH Coogee Bay Hotel which is good for Pool and live music, and Pav Coogee Pavilion which is good for drinks and DJ on the top floor.nnAll around, if you’re looking for a laid-back space with friendly people, where you are given the freedom to let a little loose and relax, this is the place.
After traveling in Australia for a year I can say that this is by far the best hostel I have ever stayed in! The staff is so friendly and makes you feel right at home when you first arrive. Millie on reception was so great at making you feel welcome and included with any events at the hostel. My personal favorite is the pool tournament held just downstairs at a cute bar/restaurant with delicious cocktails! Meg in housekeeping did such a great job cleaning my room and didn’t hesitate to offer me recommendations for around coogee. This hostel was perfect for a solo traveler as it was so social and the staff is amazing! Can’t beat these beach front views
