A Critique of Mackillop College Given the general confusion and low quality of response in the google reviews, I’ve taken it upon myself to provide a genuine critique of the psychological, interpersonal and emotional impact to which Mackillop College has had on its students, along with a general idea of my own personal experience as an observer of the events that occur here. The purpose of this review is to give an informed critique into the general inadequacy of the school. My first point relates to semiotics and the impact Mackillop has over its students. Out of what is admittedly personal bias, I’m going to use Lacanian Psychoanalysis as the basis of this section of the critique, with this out of the way, let’s begin. In Lacan’s description of the subconscious, he describes our minds as to be structured through language, denoting this aspect of our minds as the Symbolic Order, how we symbolize meaning (language) is integral to how we understand meaning and thus language is important to our understanding of the impact the school has. Through the concept of the Symbolic, we can gain an understanding of the relationship between the school and its students. 1.0 – How We Envision the (((School))) Across all students, I’ve recognized a trend in referring to Mackillop College and its related figures; we refer to Mackillop College as “The School”. What does our language surrounding this imply? The general consensus I’ve observed generally implies a dichotomy between the students and their school, in referring to it as “the”, we denote it a particular uniqueness that separates us from Mackillop College, such a uniqueness gives it the sense of power it often maintains, the conception of Mackillop College as a highly thought of place thus follows suit, in its individualization it seizes a higher power and sense of omnipresence, it’s occurred to me that such language and understanding of Mackillop College is potentially subjugating, limiting on its students, the language entails a sense of alienation that detaches the student body from their location. What alternative is there to “The School”? I’m under the impression that students should perceive their educational medium as “Our School”, denoting a sense of community. But so, what of community? This leads us to the second component of the Heavy Stuff™ that ruins this place. 1.1 – The Student Community There’s a common theme to be found in Mackillop’s higher figures (Mr Kennedy for example) perception of their school, that there is a “school community”. As a student, I believe I’m an adequate authority on this, so, what is the school community? Unity to be found in opposition to (((the school))), traditionally, there is critique of this place as opposed to praise. What we find from this idea is that the school is not viewed highly, there is dissatisfaction and community to be found in this. Besides the conception of “school community” only existing in critique, there is much division to be found among students themselves, I’m no stranger to such isolation and division that exists, when there is unity, it occurs outside the school; this place fosters no constructive community. But of course given this place is that of hormonal teens trying to understand muh “identity” ™ through cliques and stuff, it’s relatively hard to actually compact all students under a single identity and thus an unreasonable ask, if not unity among students, then what of between them and the teachers? Enter component three. 1.2 – Teacher Ethos I often refer to the teachers as though juvenile prison wardens. There’s a significant presence of hierarchy that exists between students and teachers, here. Often at times I feel as though Mackillop’s focus on performance creates a vapidly driven system of discipline, utilizing retributive justice everywhere save for situations where rehabilitative justice would produce results. A friend of mine received an all-day time out for wearing the wrong uniform as did some kids who got in a fight; is this an equal repayment? character limit exceeded~check the images
