Luna Cinemas

Story

Luna Leederville is a cinema complex located at the corner of Oxford and Vincent Streets in Leederville, a suburb of Perth, Western Australia.HistoryThe New Oxford Theatre was designed by architect Samuel B. Rosenthal and constructed by E.A. Allwood. Rosenthal was a significant architect in Western Australia in the inter-war period, known primarily for his cinema designs. The New Oxford Theatre was opened in March, 1927 by the Minister for Works, Mr. Alex C. McCallum, before a capacity audience of 1,286. The opening programme included vaudeville, music by the New Oxford Orchestra, a short play, some comedy, and a special appearance by Miss Australia, Beryl Mills. Its first managers were William Bellion and Mr Cunningham. Silent movies were originally shown to the accompaniment of a piano or organ. During a second anniversary screening in 1929, hundreds were turned away because there were no seats left. This was the first suburban theatre to install sound, which was installed in September 1929.A 3,000 seat picture garden was opened on the southern corner of the same intersection in 1935, the largest of its kind at the time, and was named 'New Oxford Beautiful'. As time went on, the gardens capacity shrunk to just under 2,000. The theatre was then owned by the Ampol Oil Company and Ralph Stewart was the operator until August 1959. Evelyn and Bob Manorgan owned the theatre from 1959 to October 1966. The picture gardens closed in 1964 and an Ampol service station was built on the site by the owners. After Ampol sold it, the theatre was closed for two months in 1966 and then re-opened as the 'Nickelodeon'. Then in 1972 it was renamed the 'Olympia' and for the next seven years showed mainly Greek and Italian films, reflecting the changing local community.

Easily the best cinema in Perth. I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a better one in all of Australia. - Fantastic selection of films, including plenty of smaller releases that don't get played at bigger cinemas - Great special events held very often - Great staff - Their double-feature screenings of old movies are amazing, and great value for money - Nice atmosphere and its location is easy to get to - Good quality screens + sound systems - Never experienced any technical issues with picture or sound quality - And a good selection of snacks and drinks. You generally get the best-behaved audiences at Luna Leederville, too, as most people who go there seem to take movies seriously, or at least keep talking to a minimum. It's rare to have other cinemagoers there that will distract you from the movie.
My review is specifically about Luna Leederville Outdoor cinema. A friend & I went there recently and were appalled by the lack of leg room. It was busy and we had to opt for bean bags. They were squished tightly together so that you had to fold yourself into a pretzel. We had to keep changing position to avoid circulation issues. Don't compromise on comfort so that you can make more money!! We won't be going back to the outdoor cinema because of this awful experience.
Great cinema, very clean and the staff are so helpful and pleasant to deal with.. Some great one off movies/documentaries been shown here. Close to loads of cools places to eat and drink in the middle of Leederville.
We really enjoyed our night here : the smell of fresh popcorn, the comfortable seats and the welcoming atmosphere took us away to another time where we forgot ourselves for just a few short hours and fell in love with cinema all over again
There is obviously a lot to like about Luna - alternative film programming, historic cinema, etc - I often choose to watch films there myself. Unfortunately I would say the new cinemas at Luna Leederville are very wide and short from the back of the seating to the screen for myself as a viewer - I felt almost cross eyed at how close I was to the screen! I also found the sound quality was not that great in the new cinemas either. I have made a note to myself that if we go back there we need to get seats bang in the middle of the cinema to get the best sound quality and even then it will still be a strain for our necks and eyes.
Great movie theatre, comfortable seats, they have a small amount of snacks avail...e.g. chips, popcorn, icecream but more importantly there is wine and coffee ! Parking is difficult, across the road there is paid parking till 7pm free after that
Rude, rude, rude !!! My daughters and I went to see a movie on the 28th August at Luna Cinemas, we were the only ones watching the 10.30am session of Tuesday Club. Great little flick, thank god, can't say anything nice about the poor service we received from the staff members though. They forgot to start the session and we alerted them at 10.40am, followed up again at 10.55am because it didn't appear that they had made any attempt to action our initial request. A male staff member then came in to the cinema to tell us it would take another 5 minutes to start the movie, some 30 minutes after it was advertised to commence. He was not happy as was evident by his poor attitude after we said it simply "wasn't good enough" as we had a lunch booked and were worried that we wouldn't get there in time and that our table might have been forfeited. He said he would skip the advertisements etc to make up time. We repeated that we were disatisfied and he was extremely rude and sarcastic and said to us "what do you want me do about it". We asked him to close the door but he just walked off so we had to get up to do that as well. We won't be visiting that cinema again, the service was disgraceful.
Great looking cinema. The staff are somewhat friendly and accommodating if not a little arrogant. They're flexible on the outside snacks which is a bonus. The outdoor cinema is awesome. However the seats are uncomfortable and the sound is somewhat thin and tinny. The screen on also the pretty small considering that the top level is so far away. Still worth a go, as a film lover I still like getting out there where possible.
Clean, polite staff. Good sound. Comfort seat and a very good movie.
Awesome little cinema, we have a great time at the immersive sessions and love the atmosphere.
