Long Chim Melbourne

About

The markets of Thailand and the streets of Bangkok provide the origin of Long Chim’s food. Every Thai eats on the street; it's the food every visitor sees.

Story

One of the world’s best chefs of Thai cuisine will bring the street food of Thailand to Melbourne’s cultural heart.

Try this, look here, what’s that – these words are the soundtrack of the Thai street, and Long Chim’s fast-and-hot service style of small and grabbable, steaming, clattering plates creates a kind of music that leads you to laugh a little louder, stay a little longer and try something new every time.

Long Chim means ‘come and taste’ in Thai and chef David Thompson invites everyone to sample the cuisine that seduced him on his first visit to Thailand in 1986.

Its not easy to decide on which Thai restaurant to visit, given there are probably few in every suburb. However when the occasion is special then you got to choose a special one as Long Chim, for which I have heard so many rave reviews. The ambience & decor was pleasing and contemporary. We ordered - 1. ‘Dried prawns with Ginger & Toasted coconut’ - an amazing entree which was so perfectly flavoured that is easily one of the best I ever had. 2. ‘Chicken Wings with deep fried shallots and cumin’ - cooked to perfection and the flavour of cumin was balanced appropriately 3. ‘Grilled Barramundi curry’ - this was mind blowing with subtle flavours of basil & coconut cream. Again one of the best I ever had. 4. ‘Thai Tea Ice Cream’ - this was an interesting fusion with pistachio and young coconut. I kind of loved the boldness in this fusion. All in all, a great place for a classy evening with your family & friends to enjoy Thai food. Be mindful its not going to come too light on your pocket though. Portions are good I would say for a restaurant of this genre.
Dinner was not to bad, when we got the bill we noticed that we didn't get the dish we ordered! We ordered Charred Noodles & got Chicken Squid Noodle! The noodle dish was nice, Green Curry is not like the chicken green curry we had in parts of Thailand last month, & was quite oily, Crab Fried Rice was nice. Bit shocked by the price being charged for dishes! Will give it another go in few week. Staff are friendly, good location.
Decent Thai food with interesting flavors. Nice environment and friendly service. Ordered the grilled barramundi curry, aromatic veggie curry, green papaya salad, pad Thai, and glass noodle salad to share between 5 people and it was enough food. Best dishes: veggie curry really great taste and goes so well with rice, barramundi curry, and pad Thai a bit on the sour side but was very flavorful. The glass noodles were a bit bland.
Great service! Very busy Saturday night, our table wasn't ready for the 8.45 pm seating. But the lady maitre'd was genuinely apologetic and kind. We were offered some water by the bar area while we waited. Menu was not as extensive as in other Thai restaurants but from the ones we ordered I can deduce that the ones which made it to the menu must already been curated. Most of the savories were great, while the duck fried rice most satisfying. Crispy pork with chinese broccolis, the sauce is great but the pork not as crispy as I like it. Most recommended dessert was Banana Roti. Looked appetizing but the taste was not quite deserving a star dessert status. May enter Long Chim from the Riverwalk or the shopping centre.
GOOD AND AUTHENTIC THAI CUISINE BUTA BIT LIGHT ON CUSTOMER FOCUS Four of us ate there on a Saturday night prior to a movie at Village Crown. We were allocated a time slot starting at 6:15 pm with an expectation of vacating table within 90 minutes which was fine. We ended up being 10 minutes late as we hadn't estimated the time needed to get into the car park at Crown long queue and then having to walk for about 10 minutes through the Crown complex via the casino floor. We got an SMS saying we'd need to be there within 10 minutes or lose the booking.. we made it - just. The wait staff were quite keen to quickly take our order and looked very flustered. We didn't get any explanation of the menu or suggestions on choices. A bit disappointing given the cost and expected quality of a Crown restaurant. The food was very good quality. We had a massaman curry, a fried fish, chicken satay, papaya salad, eggplant, chive cake. We ordered a duck fried rice but this failed to turn up even though we were billed for it we later had the bill reduced to reflect its non-arrival We are all very Thai-experienced and agreed that the dishes were authentic and tasty. Drinks were good - a Thai beer, a glass of wine and a seed drink in a tall glass. The tall glass was full to the brim and had a garnish as well so it wasn't possible to drink it without a straw but one wasn't provided until we were able to attract someone's attention to get one. The ambiance to be honest was not relaxing. The staff were dashing around and the whole place had a rushed / panicked feel to it. Despite the tight time envelope imposed by the restaurant we didn't get our main courses until very late and actually and to call for the bill and wolf down the main course in order to get to our movie on time. For people with mobility issues, there are no steps or ramps but the tables are very tightly packed so wheelchairs may be an issue. Overall - good quality food but sub-standard service given the price $300 and location within Crown. Won't go back on a weekend night but might give it another try on a quieter week night as the food quality was good.
Given the mixed reviews, I was hesitant to try long chim but came away pleasantly surprised. Prices certainly aren't cheap, but comparable to Thai restaurants of similar quality e.g. Chin chin and red spice road but differ in that you can expect less fusion and more tradition. Three sauce fish, banana roti and the green curry were standouts. We go the banquet. Service was fast and pleasant, and staff were knowledgeable.
Thai restaurant in prime location in the Crown complex. We were seated outside on a cold winter night, but the heaters kept us toastie warm. The menu had a wide selection of Thai dishes. Prices were reflective of the location. We ordered duck noodle soup, duck fried rice, crunchy prawns, fish cakes and soft shell crab noodles. Some of the dishes were very spicy, especially the fish cakes. The soft shell crab was a bit soggy. Otherwise authentic Thai flavours. The staff were attentive, friendly and accomodating.
I've been meaning to go here for a while, and am really glad I did. We went here for dinner after a conference, to share a very light meal and some drinks. We ordered a variety of appetisers. All were well-prepared and very tasty: loved the betel leaf prawns with coconut; the satay chicken skewers were very tender, with a subtle flavour I like them, but they might not be your thing if you like them dripping in sauce; and the chicken wings which were actually drumsticks? were delicious and so well-seasoned. I don't normally love chicken wings, because they're fiddly and messy to eat, but these were great. The drinks were lovely: a friend got a really lovely passionfruit Margherita, and I enjoyed my gin and tonic. I like the decor, very modern nod to Thai, without being too horribly contrived. Great service by all the staff.
Don’t know why all the bad reviews. For me really good time when I been here , always friendly service, fresh authentic Thai food. Love it.Nice food. Quick service. Price is a little bit on the high side.
Enjoyed dinner here but have to say... I still prefer the Sydney location. I don't know what it is exactly but this feels more like a money grab than the same authentic experience like Sydney. Maybe because it's in the Casino? Either way, food was tasty, just lacked the atmosphere and service. I'd give it another try sometime.
