One of the best hostel in Ayr!! Friendly manager. Nice rooms. Nice place to stay. I've been there for 7 months, working in farms completing my 88 days for the second year. Plenty of work between March and December. Never had any problem with them.
I personally thought this working hostel was brilliant! When you hear about working hostels you are expected to be sat around waiting weeks for work. But the day I arrived not even an hour later I was told by the owner I was working the next day for a guy called Dennis who was a brilliant farmer so friendly and always gave you the hours. The managers sue and mike are just the most lovely people you could meet. Always full of stories and will break their back to help you out, they're honestly like a parent figure. I also read a lot of ad reviews on josh but personally i never had a problem with him. I personally think it's all down to respect. You give him some respect and you will get it back. The rooms are standard for a working hostel. Your doing farmwork and not a king so appreciate a bed after a hard days work.I met some amazing people here and only left a day ago and already miss it.
The best hostel I've been to! The owners are so friendly and they do everything they can to help you.nWhen I arrived I was a bit scared because of bad experiences but after a few days I realized that it was the perfect place for a backpacker!nThe hostel is really nice, the kitchen has everything you need, there are fridges and freezers for everyone, the living room is big and there are dvds, books and wifi!nEverything is clean and comfortable, even if there are many people the place is big enaugh for everyone!nThey find job for you, they are always on time with the pay and if you have any problems they will fix everything you need.nStrongly recommended!
You may notice that all of the positive reviews for this tin pot favela slum masquerading as a working hostel are a couple of years old. This is because Sue, the lady who used to run Lazy Lizard lodge, was apparently a very nice person and ran the place extraordinarily well. The same can certainly not be said for the current management.nThe lovely Sue has now been replaced by two miserable, anthropomorphised field beasts Jacki and Tamara who will do their best to make your stay at this boarding house of misery as unpleasant as humanly possible.nnI was paying $175 a week for a poorly assembled garden shed with a bunk bed in it. This was close to bearable for the first few weeks until Jacki turned off our air conditioning unit, removing any sort of comfort and leaving me sweating in my little aluminium shack, hotter than Arnold’s thumb at the end of Terminator 2.nIt took me 2 months from first arriving at Lazy Lizard Lodge to actually getting a job so I was just pouring money down the toilet while sitting around waiting for work. A number of people left as there was no work for them and Jacki had the cheek to post an advert online for vacancies, knowing full well there were no jobs.nAt Lazy Lizards you have a curfew of 10pm. You will be sat outside in the smoking area when all of a sudden Tamara will waddle out of her little hut and turn the lights off with no warning or utterance of a single word. This is just one example of some of the main problems with Lazy Lizard Lodge, the lack of any people skills whatsoever from anyone who works there. If you go to the office with any minor issues such as “I’ve been here 2 months now, any idea when I’ll be starting work?” Or “There is no dish in the microwave, could you possibly replace it please?” Jacki and Tamara will immediately get defensive and begin screeching like apes until you walk away in frustration.nnIf you’re up past 10.30pm, Jacki’s alcoholic husband Josh will appear out of nowhere like a drunken Beetlejuice with a can of Great Northern in one hand and a garden hose in the other and begin blasting you with water and threatening to beat you up if you don’t go to bed.nYou are charged $10 dollars a day for using their scrapheap challenge vans that don’t even make it all the way home most of the time. If you think that you can use your own vehicle to get to work and skip out on the $10 a day fee, then think again buddy as that is certainly not allowed. You have to use their rusty, non-roadworthy bangers that leak oil and reek of damp to take you to a farm 20 minutes down the road.nTamara forgot to lock the gate once and some nice locals walked in at night and stole our possessions. The CCTV didn't pick anything up though as it’s only there to keep an eye on us, not for our safety or security. She did say that from now on they will make sure that gate stays locked, until a couple of weeks later when it happened again and more of our stuff was stolen.nThe washing machines cost $4, but they destroy your clothes so you won’t be using them anyway. Also there are no dryers, so if it rains, your clothes will still be wet in the morning, but if it doesn't rain, the sprinklers are positioned underneath the clothes line so they will make sure to soak your clothes in the absence of drizzle, so that’s good.nnThere are a multitude of other issues that I don’t want to go into for fear of rambling, and also I can’t be bothered. Just understand that this is a terrible working hostel and I urge anyone reading this not to come here. There are much better ways to earn money than spending your time at Lazy Lizard Lodge. Even hanging around the docks on your knees with mouth agape, waiting to service a line up of sailors for a few pence would be a much more dignified way to earn money.nnAvoid this place like you would avoid a homeless meth addict, screaming gibberish and kicking a lamppost. Which is something you’ll most likely encounter if you take a walk around the local townnStay away
This was the first stop on my trip to Melbourne. After seeing the reviews me and my friend Richard were terrified. But im glad to say the reviews are so untrue. Admittedly its not a 5 star hostel and if you expect a working hostel to be 5star your out of your mind. Although the place isnt five star the people truly make it 5 star. Sue and Mike care so much for all the backpackers and ensure they have a safe stay. Its like having temporary parents thats how much they care. Alomg side that the people you meet are do friendly and truly become friends you will remember forever!nnWorkwise Sue and Mike do as much as they can to provide every backpacker with work. However people need to understand that work is seasonal and work amounts can change. However even then Sue and Mike will do everthing they can to find you work.nnAwesome place.nAwesome people.nGreat vibes.nAnd a truly home like safe feeling while staying there.
