The following summary outlines the history of John Barnes & Company and also informs you of some of the achievements John Barnes & Company have accomplished throughout its years in business.

John Franklin Barnes first established John Barnes & Company Locksmiths in 1949. Its first location was on the corner of Swanston and Little Lonsdale Streets. In 1951, Ron Roberts became a partner in the business. From then on the business flourished and relocated to its present location in Elizabeth Street.

During this growth, John Barnes, ever the entrepreneur, introduced the DeHavilland Jet Boat to Australia and was one of the first Victorian distributors of the famous Victor Mower.

The above achievements were only the start. John Barnes & Company were also able to claim the largest range of key cutting machinery in the Southern Hemisphere, leading to the cutting of school locker keys by the thousands.

John Barnes & Company was also the original automotive lock specialists in Melbourne and became one of the foundation members of the Master Locksmiths Association.

In 1974, Ron Roberts completely bought out John Barnes, and with his two sons, Colin and Ron (II), he continued to operate John Barnes & Company as a Roberts family business.

Because of the continuous growth of John Barnes & Company, in 1977, Ron Roberts decided to expand his business by establishing the East Bentleigh branch.

Today, John Barnes continues to operate as a Roberts family business with Ron senior and Colin at the Melbourne branch and Ron (II) at the East Bentleigh branch.

The growth and success of John Barnes & Company did not happen by accident, it was due to the prudent decisions and development of unique relationships with its customers and suppliers. The strength of the relationship between John Barnes & Company and their suppliers continues to grow and is evident through the quality products that John Barnes & Company supply and recommend.
