Overall great experience. We were passing through Whangarei and decided to give this a try. Good George Beer is great. Service is good too. For signature dish place it was good too. Have we tried something similar or better? Yes. But surely worth a try. Great place and ambience. overall great experience.
As we are not locals, we relied on Google reviews and decided to have our dinner here. We ordered what was known as ‘The Premium Rib Platter’ for “A bit of everything” experience. I have to say, thank you for not charging us $1 per takeaway container. That was offered when we placed our order. Hence the 1-star However, food was rather disappointing, definitely ill-fitting for a 4-star restaurant. Prawn cocktail served tasted off. Initially I thought it was just one or two bad prawn, but when I had the 3rd/4th bite, I know it’s definitely not the case. Returned it and although server did offer for a new serving, I wasn’t keen at all. The aftertaste was bad. Anything fried was good like their onion rings, golden fries, curly fries, fish bites but it’s not like they need much skills to prepare. Ribs are supposedly the signature dish. Meat from the ribs do fall off the bone, but the sauce were flat, tasted like any store bought BBQ sauce. Smoked chicken wings is just regular fried wings with sauce that tasted suspiciously similar to the rib’s sauce. Same with the sauce on their smoked chicken thighs, but fortunately it wasn’t dry. Smoked hotlink sausage was okay a little salty for my liking but each to their own, crab dip sadly just feels like cream with no meat. I’m not sure if any discount were given for our meal but we did order 1 beer with our platter and our bill came up to $128. Very very disappointing. Don’t think I’ll ever come again or recommend it to anyone.
I think the chefs in this restaurant forget one important rules of bars: If you want people to drink more, you need to make your food flavorful, or at least put salt in it. Our $60 platter is absolutely bland, no salt in chips, wedges or even the sour cream dips. Even the coleslaw salad needs salt, which was like a joke. Ribs were well cooked, but sauce was more of tomato sauce and nothing else. The sausage is actually good, can be too lean for some but I personally like it. No complaints about service or drinks, but was expecting more from the food
Had a great experience at Jimmy's,, very tender and juicy ribs but not something i havent tried elsewhere. However i did LOVE the chicken wings with smooth and tangy sauce - actually enjoyed it more than the ribs! It is true when they say this place gets busy, we came around 5.45 and there was already a bit of a queue outside. It didnt take us long to wait for a table though. There is a line throughout the night so i suggest getting there early!
Ordered the rib shack platter.. the best smoky wings were my fav and the crab dip oh so delicious. The ribs too sweet for my liking but all in all great experience and great service
Great food and great service. The atmosphere was really cool along with the music. Prices are okay for what you get. The steak served on a hot plate was really neat as you can cook it yourself just how you like it!

Awesome food!! was nice and quiet for lunch and we bought 2 of each the premium platter and the seafood platter and both was awesome with awesome portion size. Worth the price and we still had to take some home feed 10 adults and like I said we still had to take alot home. We bought 4 jugs of soda and we had to give one away.
Service was terrible, we had the largest seating and were ignored by staff. A member of the group had to walk over to someone to get service. I suspect they wanted to avoid having to take a large order from us. Seriously disappointing as this restaurant suits the needs of large groups with cost effective platters etc.. The food was great, kids enjoyed helping themselves to what they wanted. Hope to see improved service next time we visit.
Had dinner there tonight. The servers were great, accommodating with a beautiful smile. The whole atmosphere of the dinner was relaxing and personable. Food served hot and per my order. Service was prompt and reasonably priced for a touristy area. Would stop there again. Kid-friendliness: High chair available
