Family friendly guided tour! Very educational and the tour guides are fantastic! So interesting to see life behind bars from years ago and where they housed the criminally insane afterwards. Would highly recommend to anyone passing by Ararat!nWe booked online through their website, very easy to purchase, our family of 6 came up to $60 altogether with our youngest being free as he is under 5. Tour runs for 1-1.5hrs with plenty of oppotunities for photos but no videos. Parking was easy as we parked directly infront of the door for free.
Come and do the tour!! Amazing place, interesting facts and a real insight into how things were done until recently. The clip at the end of the tour really brought this home!! Such a brilliant tour, I did it years ago but wanted to show my family. They also found it intriguing! We will do the asylum and ghost tour next!
The guide we had was fantastic. She described everything to a tee. The signage thruout the site was very good. It gave you a look into who was institutionalised and how they were treated. It must have been hell for the inmates. Hard to believe that this place was still running late last century. I would have hated working there, especially when the inmates were not medicated. It was well worth the entry fee. I would like to go to the ghost tour there.
One of the best tours we’ve ever been on. Our guide was Allan and from the moment he started speaking, he was engaging, warm, friendly, and incredibly knowledgeable.nWhat really made this tour stand out was the balance we felt, which we have always wanted on these tours but rarely seem to get it. Allan didn’t just talk at us, he showed us around, shared his knowledge, and then gave us time to explore and take it all in while he was open to answer anything we asked about it.nnAllan was happy to answer questions, chat, and genuinely connect with the group, which made the experience feel relaxed and personal rather than a general tour.nnWe were so impressed with how incredibly well maintained the old gaol was, every area felt cared for and thoughtfully preserved, which really added to our experience. It was clean, authentic, and respectful of its history, making it easy to imagine the lives and stories connected to the place without it feeling staged or neglected.nnWe absolutely loved it and would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting the Old Gaol in Ararat.
My friend Ness and I were excited to take the J Ward tour, which we did during the day with Alan as our guide. The history and evolution of the gaol is fascinating from many perspectives and the bluestone building itself is beautiful. Alan was a wonderful guide - well versed in the history of the gaol as well as in local knowledge, and a great sense of humor that brought the tour to life. His empathy for some of the gaol’s more unfortunate inhabitants was heartwarming. His genuine love for the history of the place was evident and made the tour a joy to take part in. Ness and I can’t wait to tour Aradale next, which we aim to do in the coming months!nThank you for making a 4 hour round trip so worthwhile Alan, and so much appreciation goes to the organisation as a whole for keeping this piece of local history alive.
