Fantastic little cake shop and bakery with a large assortment of cakes, pastries and savories. After devouring one of their great chicken schnitzel gourmet rolls i settled for an apple slice which was delicious and well presented and a latte. We decided to take them up on the 4 cakes for $17 offer to take them home for later and went for the salted caramel, flourless orange, Tiramisu and Passionfruit cheescake which were all delightful. Their beef and mushroom pie got a big thumbs up from the wife and their coffee is also quite good too. Owner is friendly and loves a chat but all in all a great little cake shop that comes highly recommended. Will be back again soon

For you to understand my story, I must start at the beginning. I was researching pie shops in my local area, trying to find “that pie” that I could count on in both good times and bad. I stumbled across some information regarding a Carol’s Pies on Bell st, Heidelberg. Arriving at my destination both me and my companions were both shocked and offended to discover that Carol had suffered the fate of so many other small business’ in this fine country. Instead of a pie shop, we found a corporate suit, fat-cat wholesale charcuterie office front; offering a range of small goods at warehouse prices. After assessing the area, I knew that I had to find out more, both about Carol, and myself. I surveyed the area. Finding a small, bright pink shop directly across the road, I knew with both their vantage and size would offer me with some consolence, if not advice. I entered the store. I addressed the employees curtly and told them my tale. After hearing this, they agreed that the pie store had been foreclosed. Sensing our conversation coming to an end an idea emerged. I asked the gentleman behind the counter, who sported a fashionable goatee, if he had any advice of where to find the beforementioned “that pie”. I was enchanted by the offerings of beautiful “beef and mushroom” laced with traces of “pepper” in the pies offered at establishment not shy of 2 kilometres, as the crow flys, of our current location. Filled with delicate instructions on how to reach this location, me and my companions headed off, minds racing and stomaches hungry. Adrenaline took over, with thoughts of peppercorn and gravy racing through my mind. Flashbacks to the great pies of Cardwell, North Queensland, chunky pieces of tender slow cooked steak soared through my mind. We arrived at the location and decided that these would be the pies we would eat. Offering only 3 flavours (Curry, Beef & Mushroom and Plain) we understood that our options were limited because of the nature of the shop. Cake shops do not “have” to sell pies, it’s only a bonus if they do. We ordered 4 Beef & Mushroom and one Plain pie and 2 sausage rolls to fuel our weary bodies. We were advised that these pies would need to be heated in order to enjoy. The sausage rolls came out and they were enjoyable but not amazing. The pastry was nice, as was the filling, but nothing extraordinary. Our pies arrived slowly minutes later. Each Beef & Mushroom offered tepid gravy with mince cold in the centre. Disgusted but not yet shaken, 3 out of 4 finished our pies without sending them to be reheated. We then ordered 4 pies and 1 sausage roll to be taken home, providing the matradee with specific instruction to heat the pies longer so we did not have to reheat at home. We arrived home not 3 minutes later and we were straight into the pies. What did we find? Cold! The sausage roll was as hard as a log, and stale to boot! It is safe to say we will not be returning in this lifetime. It’s as my father always told me.. Never trust a man with a goatee.

This review combines service and quality, and I feel a bit disappointed at having to limit it to a three-star rating. I'll start with a couple of positives, though, and they are: the cheerfulness of the fellow who served us and the marvellous range of cakes, slices and other sweet treats on offer. So here's how my experience unfolded when I took my 86yo mother there for a treat in May 2017... After seating mum at one of the sidewalk tables, I ordered a couple of coffees and two slices of cheesecake - plain and berry. My mother loves cream with cake so I dutifully asked for a dollop of cream on the cheesecake. I was a bit surprised when I was told that they didn't have cream, so I asked instead for a scoop of ice cream. That was also met with a "We don't have any" response. Surprising and disappointing for a store that serves sit-down customers. When the cheesecake was served, it became all the more of a poor experience when I had to remove the plastic wrapping around both slices. OK, if I'd asked for the cheesecake to take away I would have appreciated this, but for a sit-down customer it was just a bit of a downer, especially on top of the plain cheesecake being quite crumbly and tough. I might expect this from a baked cheesecake, but not from the more "traditional" style we were served. What really proved to be the icing on the cake (yes, pun intended) of a poor experience was the table. Yes, the table. I know from other so many other experiences in Melbourne cafes that part of setting up tables is ensuring solid footing. So it was just a bit much when my mother inadvertently dropped her foot onto one of the table's footings and saw a good portion of her coffee slop out onto the saucer and table. I know Ivanhoe Cakes has a good name around town, and it's my sincere hope that maybe this was just a poor day - we all have them, after all. So I'll pop back in over the next couple of weeks and (hopefully for the better) update this review.

For your daily coffee/cake pit stop or to pick up a premade cake/pie - you cant go wrong everything is fantastic, but - if you need a cake for a major event- don't risk it! I know this review seems harsh, but it's valid. I went in 6 weeks before my event to order a cake & spoke to John who was great! He quoted me & told me to return 2 weeks before my event. I did so - now 2 weeks before my event & John he had no memory of our conversation or ever meeting me - even after spending 30-40 minutes discussing particulars!.. Once again, we discussed everything & I was requoted - same price & same cake. 8 days before my event, John advised the main cake price had now increased from $220 to $380. I was burnt twice by this baker & decided not to let him burn me three times & ruin my even with a below average cake. Needless to say - I went else where for my event cake & was lucky they were able to accommodate at such short notice.
