Like most skyrail stations, you're rather high up but the view is nice. You're technically not supposed to take the stairs up or down since it's an emergency exit only.
Hughesdale is the middle child of the Skyrail project, often overlooked because it is sandwiched between the giants of Oakleigh and Chadstone.nnStructurally it is an identical twin to Clayton, featuring the same bland designed concrete spans and minimalist platform shelters.nnFor a station that was essentially a last minute addition to the elevation project it is remarkably well integrated.nnOnce you are at the top though it is the standard modern experience, cold, grey, and very sterile. It lacks the bustling shopfronts of Carnegie but it makes up for it with direct access to the Poath Road cafes.nnThe level crossing removal here was a life saver for anyone trying to drive to Chadstone on a Saturday morning as that bottleneck was legendary. It is a very no frills version of the Skyrail aesthetic where nothing is unique and nothing is surprising.nnIt is built for efficiency rather than personality. If you have spent five minutes at any other elevated station on this line you have already experienced Hughesdale. It is a functional shiny and completely predictable concrete beast.
A huge improvement on the old station.nThe skyrail now means that Poath Road traffic can flow, there is less noise from the boom gates being down for so long and the station itself is much cleaner and easier to access.nnSince it is now on the opposite side of Poath Road the station is actually in Murrumbeena and not Hughesdale and we missed out on the decent landscaping that both Carnegie and Murrumbeena Stations got as part of the Skyrail upgrade. Bland concrete and no garden beds. Boooo. It would be nice to have a bit of greenery and colour around the big HUG sign.nnUnmanned Station there is Platform Staff during am and pm peaks.nOnce the whole line has been upgraded it will be nice to have fewer bus replacements.nnPublic Toilets nAccessible Toilet nEscalator nLift nAutomated Myki machine nWell lit lightingnPSOs at night
Shout out to the train announcer in the blue scarf that I see sometimes in the morning. Enthusiastic attitude, lovely voice, fun announcements, makes catching a train in the early hours of the morning a bit more enjoyable.
The only reason I'm not giving it a one is because of one of the metro employees who is almost always there and always greets everyone so warmly. However there are way too many bus replacements that take forever and are always full. Today it took me two and a half hours to get to school. Unacceptable.
