Absolutely don’t give a dam about there patients! February 2016 till November 2017 My mother took my father in there over 5 times for suicidal attempts serious attempts and they sent him away every single time saying he’s low to no risk! Which was so wrong we lived with him and knew everything that was going on but yet they wouldn’t believe my mother that was screaming out for help! Very disappointing he has left my mother with 4 kids all on our own. We have to live every day knowing he’s gone but only if this stupid hospital helped maybe he still would be here today!
My first report was mostly positive from an experience where my friend was admitted to the inpatient service, the nurses were helpful and friendly, only gripe was lack of communication with family and no attempt of psychological therapysee paragraph at bottom, may be due to lack of health staff. She is a lot better now thanks.. My later second report is very positive and is for myself going to the outpatient unit. Both the psychiatrist and nurse were awesome, well trained and spent a lot of time listening to my concerns. I like to personally thank the psychiarist Dougal and the nurse Heather, it's a tough job trying to figure out how to treat mental health but you guys did well. I'm back to normal these days and grateful I had the chance for care. Sadly due to under funding and lack of psychiatrists/nurses many people in need get rejected unless the complexity or severity of their case warrants it. I can only hope one-day this changes as GPs are limited in their scope of understanding with mental illness. We need to continue to put pressure on the government for an effective increase in funding.
Psychiatrists listened and were understanding. I was given good advice and treatment. I was nervous at first and although I can't speak to all other reviews here, for my situation with moderate depression it was very helpful. So I can certainly recommend the psychiatrists here if you have moderate depression, I believe it's worth getting the help.
I felt nothing but support when admitted into this hospital. Originally coming in under the Mental Health Act the staff worked tirelessly to help me get to a place where we would all be comfortable with me being taken off the Act and be a voluntary patient. I believe I have very specific views on life and my 'illness' and for the most part they were understood and respected with the change over in nurses, not all of them understand who you are from a few notes alone The staff were considerate, on my first night on the ward my partner was allowed to stay in my room with me - which goes a very long way. Also, there are quite a few characters in hospital but I was constantly being asked whether i felt safe, and comfortable.. Even as an outpatient I'm still receiving the help I need. I think the nurses of this establishment need to be praised more for their hard work and general kind nature toward the patients and staff alike.
We went there in an emergency with my sister who was having a mental episode. They did not listen, talked over us the whole time, said she was not an urgent enough case for them to help further despite the fact she has a history of suicide attempts and self-harm marks all over her arms. They tried telling her she has bad mental health because of a recent break-up, and did not listen to the fact that she has been struggling for YEARS. The man we saw from the crisis resolution team was disgustingly dismissive and tried to relate his own experiences to us. Overall an absolute sham. Stop labelling yourself as a mental health clinic if you won't even help with mental health issues. Disgusting.
Absolutely appalling!! I would never, ever recommend this service to anyone, the staff are useless and belittling! There is no duty of care, they leave you feeling even worse and do not take you seriously. They make you feel like a complete burden and waste of time
Staff have good intentions towards patients even if the inpatients feel otherwise. They are caring and always looking to work with patients best interest. Staff here need to be more acknowledge for the hard work they do and the amount of stress and encounter they put up with on a daily basis. The hospital needs a makeover, it is quite old. A new environment would boost the team's morale to continue providing specialised care to those acutely unwell. Also making patients feel comfortable. Inpatient and outpatient Staff need to be looked after more and deserve much more. If there were limited to no nurses the community would be chaos.
Complete shambles of an operation. Staff who lack empathy and professionalism. No protocols in place for risk management other than trying to blame the patient themselves or passing the buck onto someone else. Terrible communication with family members. Thanks to this hospital my brother, who is an inpatient, is now a missing person. But apparently that's not the hospitals concern, so the "lovely" charge nurse told me.
How any human allows someone to be not urgent the day of medical release after an OD held only for family saying he's not safe...then believe him a week later they're okay to be out and staying with family no confirmation absolutely ridiculous !! Listen to family!! Some great nurses ... overall a failure of the mental health system NZ needs to help those most vulnerable.
This hospital be you visiting or staying there is absolutely diabolical. You have an episode just driving into the disgusting prison like grounds and building Shame on you Christchurch for not prioritising. There are far too many so called professionals walking around looking for rooms that have been taken by some other person. It is chaotic and a real mess to say the least. When will public hospitals get their act together. Maybe NEVER!!!!!!
