High Court of Australia

Story

The High Court of Australia is the supreme court in the Australian court hierarchy and the final court of appeal in Australia. It has both original and appellate jurisdiction, the power of judicial review over laws passed by the Parliament of Australia and the parliaments of the States, and the ability to interpret the Constitution of Australia thereby powerfully shaping the development of federalism in Australia. The High Court is mandated by Constitution section 71, which vests in it the judicial power of the Commonwealth of Australia. The Court was constituted by, and its first members were appointed under, the Judiciary Act 1903. It now operates under Constitution sections 71 to 75, the Judiciary Act, and the High Court of Australia Act 1979. It is composed of seven Justices: the Chief Justice of Australia, currently Susan Kiefel, and six other Justices. They are appointed by the Governor-General of Australia, on the advice of the federal government, and under the constitution must retire at age 70.Since 1979, The High Court has been located in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory. The majority of its sittings are held in the High Court building, situated in the Parliamentary Triangle, overlooking Lake Burley Griffin. With an increasing utilisation of video links, sittings are also commonly held in the state capitals.

If you are a fan of brutalist architecture I am, then this is a building not to be missed. Around forty years since it opened and still looking pristine - the same cannot be said for the approaches to the building which are being poorly managed. Unfortunately the court was not sitting but it did give us the opportunity to wander into the court rooms and ask lots of questions of the very helpful and cheerful custodians. A visit is not just for civic minded school groups! An excellent cafe is fifty metres away at the National Portrait Gallery.
Odd place to visit, but quite a spectacular building and well worth spending 20mins looking around. Its 50m away from the Art Gallery. Helpful staff very happy to provide information about the building. best to visit when courts not in session!
This place flippen is not the shizz, or this flippen place is not the shizz, to be like grammerly correct and stuff. I sit here corresing my knee dreding the time i ever whent to the top cort. The big suits are there are pullin the strings, I ain't about that sorta stuff ya know, i don't really turn that way. Now lets get to Master Ping Xiao Po, or also known as in the franchise Kung Fu Panda. Jack black sent me here? jack black is gone.
honestly terrible i go into the high court with a murder charge and i actually got sentenced to jail. I would not recommend this place to anyone unless they have a severe talking disorder just like me. My teeth are forever sensitive from the day that i ate 500g pack of sour patch kids. I also have dyslexia like i cannot spell osijfoseijfoseigh aaarrrrhhhhh i cannot spell i need help which is probably why i am in a mental institution. i also got caught guilty of suicide which i did not know was possible at the time until i saw the sherlock episode called a study in pink
My Canberran friend took me there on 1st of May, 2018. The court is not busy as its earliest hearing would only fall on May 8, 3018. The activities I witnessed inside were tourist or knowledge transfer - related!
This place is terrible. I went here on a murder charge and i was convicted even though i was guilty. it was so annoying because i wanted to kill 3 more people and was stopped at 97. I couldn't even get a victory royale. A terrible place, never go again.
THE HIGH COURT OF AUSTRALIA IS DELIBERATELY TURNING A BLIND EYE TO 4 EXHIBITS LOADED WITH DNA EVIDENCE GOING "MISSING" IN THE NEILL FRASER CASE. CLEARLY THE REAL OFFENDERS HAVE POWERFUL CONNECTIONS. ROGER SHOWED US HOW IT IS DONE AND THE LOSS OF EVIDENCE IS RIGHT ON TARGET FOR CORRUPTION DETECTED.
Worth a visit, great architecture to take in along with history & obviously learning more about high court proceedings.
High Court of Australia, indeed a great place to visit with a lot to learn. Everything about law .
The architecture says that there is no higher authority in Australia than the High Court.
