Heide Museum of Modern Art

About

Heide offers an inspiring, educational and thought-provoking experience of modern and contemporary art, architecture, gardens and social history.

Story

Heide Museum of Modern Art began life in 1934 as the home of John and Sunday Reed and has since evolved into one of Australia's most important cultural institutions. Heide, as it is affectionately known, has built a national reputation based upon the vision of the Reeds and their role in the development and promotion of modern art in Australia. Inspired by the Reeds' nurturing of the young artists of their generation, Heide continues to support the contemporary art of today through its collection and exhibition program.

Heide offers a unique blend of art, history, and nature. The Italian exhibition with interior objects was a delightful start, complemented by the museum’s permanent collection of paintings. The surrounding gardens are equally impressive, featuring herbs, fruits, vegetables, and striking sculptures. The cacophony of cicadas adds a truly immersive atmosphere, especially when combined with the sightings of colorful birds like cockatoos. A must-visit for art and nature lovers alike.
Friendly staff , quite a unique art pieces and handiwork inside the museum . In addition there is a huge park to walk. If spring time you can see lovely cherry blossoms in the park . Just that parking is quite limited
Wonderful Italian exhibition showing now. Beautifully curated. We had lunch at Heide Kitcken - highly recommended for quality innovation and friendly service. One of the best gift shops I’ve been to.
I came to see the sculpture garden and had no idea there was a fantastic makers market there this weekend. They had fantastic stalls with really beautiful handmade items. I didn’t notice food trucks or coffee so had to visit the cafe. The service there was very very slow and a touch frigid. We sat in the covered courtyard and got eaten alive by mozzies. Very unpleasant. For some reason the inside area was empty, and they were only offering outdoor seating. They were very busy and there was a real bottleneck in this area. The sculpture garden was lovely but so much smaller than I remembered from 10 years ago. I kept doing laps thinking I must have missed a bit. I was very grateful for the abundance of free parking as it was very busy with the market and I secured a park very far away, but in nice bushland so it was a pleasant walk to the market from there.
Beautiful place to visit with wonderful artwork throughout the property. The grounds are large and peppered with amazing sculptures. The history of the museum is very interesting and you get a feel as to what the original owners taste and mind must have been like. Lots of variety from traditional to modern styles. Would recommend spending about an hour and half or more depending on if you want to sit in the grounds.
