Story

Heide Museum of Modern Art began life in 1934 as the home of John and Sunday Reed and has since evolved into one of Australia's most important cultural institutions. Heide, as it is affectionately known, has built a national reputation based upon the vision of the Reeds and their role in the development and promotion of modern art in Australia. Inspired by the Reeds' nurturing of the young artists of their generation, Heide continues to support the contemporary art of today through its collection and exhibition program.

This Museum has something for everyone. Broad range of modern art to see. Guided tour of Arthur Boyd exhibition was very well done - very informative.

The surrounding bushland and parks are beautiful. You can look through the sculptures and gardens for free. The sculptures are varied and interesting in their natural surrounds.

One of my favourite places. Whether you’re on a date, catching up with an old friend or on a picnic. Even those who aren’t into art will appreciate the sculpture gardens situated on the edge of the Yarra river. 

For those interested in both new and less new Australia art there’s the various wings to visit from the old, post modern to the cutting new. 

The cafe is pretty good with my only gripe being I was once given a cappuccino without the chocolate on it. When I questioned this I was told “that’s how we serve it here”. The rest of us would call that a flat white. More a quirk than a complaint. 

In short, I love Heide.

Lovely open space, but there is now a charge to enter the original house. What a shame! Now out of my price range :(

My favourite place in Melbourne. Very relaxing walking around the sculpture garden and my children love the climbing tree. I take all our visitors here and have a meal at the cafe if we have time. I love the shop and have bought many things there. In fact my Christmas list is purely gifts from Heide plus an annual membership. One note of warning: Be ware of the snakes, especially if you wander down towards the river.
