Extremely disappointing. The omelette was exceptionally salty and rather oily. There were only around 4 or maybe 5 prawns, and you had to use a knife to cut the egg! Heaps of carrot, a lot of cabbage, some spinach, and very little of anything else.
The food was very authentic, tasty and good value for money as well. The service was friendly, efficient, attention to detail. Would come back and recommend for family and friend for sure.
This is a followup from my previous review circa December 2020. Since then we have been again in 2021 and again tonight in 2022. We were originally nervous about returning to Gourmet House after reading some recent negative reviews. We decided to go regardless and we were not disappointed. The food was excellent, staff were professional and food was prompt. We were worried about waiting times after reading the previous reviews, but they were very fair see below -Times taken since ordering- Entree chicken spring rolls - 7m 25s Fried rice - 12m 13s Mongolian beef - 14m 52s Lemon chicken 15m 33s As you can see, about 15 minutes after walking in, we were already enjoying all of the food we ordered. This time is even faster than some supposed "fast food" experiences I have had in the past. On the way in we had a pleasent conversation about the traffic with the staff. They gave us the option to pick our seat as there were several vacant tables. But I dont know why the reasturant wasnt packed after we left our last glowing review. We picked the window seat. The table service was prompt and professional. It was accompanied by delectible complimentary prawn chips. These looked so good that I couldnt resist eating them despite the fact that I am allergic to prawns. I was not disappointed. These prawn chips were so tasty that they were worth having the allergic reaction later on. I tried dipping a prawn chip in the spring roll dipping sauce and was very pleased with the taste. I would recommend you do the same when you go, but you will need to get your own prawn chips and sauce as we ate all of ours. The main courses were of course the main attraction. The mongolian beef had us sizzling to our hearts content. The lemon chicken was easy to chew, which is why we left this review. I was relieved that the lemon chicken wasnt sour like a normal lemon, since I was worried it would be sour like a normal lemon. The chair upgrades and dividers were a nice touch. The vibe increased by at least 15% due to these enhancements. I believe they were introduced some time between 2021 and 2022 given we last attended in 2021. The gourmet house will always hold a special place in our hearts and it was so meaningful that me and my partner included a section about it in our original song that we've written about the dorf. We hope to have the song completed by mid 2025 so please watch this space for updates. We will definitely be back again, probably next time we are in hahndorf and feel like eating at Gourmet House. - Jake
Fantastic restaurant just off busy main street in Hahndorf if you're looking for a quite reprieve. Chicken and prawn dumplings and chicken in black bean sauce was great. The host looked after us well; good conversationalist and checked on us regularly.
We were very disappointed with meals other than lemon chicken which was very nice. Hokien noodles with prawns came out with 2 prawns. Informed additional prawns would cost $1 each. Special fried rice had no shrimp or pork, chicken only. Lovely waiter Layla.
Recommending the Hokkien Fried Noodles above all.
I requested a vegan meal nothing on the menu of rice noodles, vegetables and whatever sauce didn't have fish/oyster sauce. They added egg. My husband had the fish and was up early and often to get it out. Despite the lovely, attentive and apologetic front of house staff, the cook screaming at them from the kitchen had the most influence on our night out.
Horrendous experience all round. Staff openly fighting with eachother, then we were seated without menus for around half an hour, eventually menus came and we ordered drinks. Drinks took an hour to arrive a long wait for adults let alone two four year old children, then the food another hour after that. Staff were rude, didn't bother to give us plates for dinner so we re-used the entree plates. Food was inedible and none of the meals came out together. Fried rice was yellow, gluggy, no flavour, nothing like the photo on the menu. Noodles were undercooked/doughy flavourless and like 3 pieces of meat. 2.5hours for terrible food. Wish we had gone to any of the other amazing restaurants in handorf. Couldn't have picked a worse place to eat.
Our experience here was awful! Waiting over an hour for drinks and entre, overhearing staff talking about us and conflict between staff. Fried rice was nothing like the photos and tasted awful, yellow and gluggy. Noodles were doughy and only a few pieces of beef in a noodle dish, filled with grated carrot and onion. Dim sims and dumplings were good. I dont mind waiting over an hour for drinks if its good food but will not be returning as it ruined out night. Left feeling frustrated and dissapointed.
Gourmet House Chinese is my go to for Chinese. I travel 35mins because each time I've had takeaway from here, it's been really good. However, for my birthday dinner takeaway last Sunday I was really disappointed. I order my usual Lemon Chicken this was tasty as always, Chicken Dim Sum Fried these were huge, oily and had a funky flavour that I didn't enjoy, Mongolian Beef yummy but very oily, Fried Rice good as usual and then I tried there Sweet n Sour Chicken I've never order this, and thought it would be like the Pork version, nuggets of chicken battered and deep fried. Instead it was excatly the same chicken breast you get in the Lemon Chicken dish. So I was disappointed. The sauce was heavy on the tomato sauce and didn't taste anything else. So overall I was really disappointed as I don't get Chinese often and it was a special meal and was left unsatisfied. Don't know if I'd go back.
