We moved houses in late 2022 and I had to find a new school for my 2 kids then in year 1 and 3. I did my research and Gumdale State School had great ratings and word-of-mouth reputation so we went out of catchment to enrol there. Huge mistake! This school is incredibly overrated! My kids started hating going to school there. The school caters for 1100+ students and happily takes out of catchment even though they claim they have limited availability only. I don’t think they’re able to manage the amount of children they’re taking properly which results in zero attention and care. There is never a free dress day in this school, not for end of term, nor for end of year. There is a playground for prep to year 2 and then from year 3-6 they have a quarter of the oval. Most breaks kids just sit in front of the tuck shop doing nothing. In Book week only prep-2 can dress up, as if 3-6 are not still kids. In 2023 there was no father days stall. Overpriced tuckshop. Overpriced activities like excursions, signature programs and camps. School cares more about sponsors than students. Strictly academical and no fun or play. Kids are not allowed to even bring soccer balls to school to play on breaks. Drop off and pick up takes half an hour and creates massive congestion as the infrastructure in the area is not designed for a school that hosts over 1100 students. Perhaps if we weren’t coming from another school I would have thought all the above is the norm in general at all schools, but because I was able to compare with experience elsewhere, I was shocked. My children were begging me not to go to school every single morning and at the end it became unbearable. We only lasted a year and a half and mid 2024 I moved them to another school. They are thanking me now every day. My year 5 child plays at the new school’s playground- something she couldn’t do at Gumdale for 1 and a half years as there is no playground for years 3-6. My year 3 child brings a soccer ball to the new school and gets to actually play soccer rather than exhaust all first break time waiting for a ball. I regret so much we wasted a year and a half in Gumdale- precious time my kids could have used to actually be kids rather than being constantly told to sit with their backs up straight and keep quiet. Never again in this school. My advice is - think twice if you’re considering it.
This school is wonderful! With my other child in private school, I truly cannot see a difference in growth, opportunity or development in regards to their education. The reception administration staff are kind and caring and as the first point of call in a school, that speaks volumes. I swear they know every child's name that goes into the office! Well done GSS!
Great school, we love it
When we moved to Australia, we were recommended to move to a specific suburb in Brisbane as it was well know for the quality of its school, so we followed the recommendations, moved there and enrolled our children in the local school. However, after few years we moved to Wakerley/Gumdale and so we changed our kids to GSS. I cannot tell you enough how happy we are with the change!!!nGSS offer our children not only excellent academic education, but also show genuine care by helping them to build resilience, confidence and helping them to explore their strengths and preferences with a variety of extracurricular programs.nThanks GSS
My child is only in prep at Gumdale but I can already see and appreciate the high quality of the teaching staff given how far my child has come, even with the COVID disruptions, since the start of the year. The leadership team are actively involved in the school community - very visible and constantly engaging with the students. Their focus on student wellbeing is also clear; providing loads of resources for parents. They have gone above and beyond for us, with lots of small gestures and rewards that have motivated my child and made him feel special, and part of something bigger.
