The hostel is made up of of WHV guests, so everyone’s there with similar goals, which makes everything easier. They helped me get a job in my first week, and I managed to finish my 88 days in just over three months, though I ended up staying a little longer. I also did small jobs at the hostel in exchange for discounts on rent, which was really helpful.nThis was the format during the period I stayed there: They help you to get a job and provide transport to the farms; I mostly stayed in a 3-person room, and everyone has their own locker for personal and kitchen items; they also provides basic utensils like cutlery, a mug, and a plate. They don’t officially provide pots or pans, but there are usually plenty left behind by previous guests; quiet hours start at 9h30 pm, and most people respect them since everyone wakes up early for work.nI didn’t have any issues with bedbugs, though I saw a few cases in other rooms. The hostel handled by isolating and fumigating the rooms and rearranging people. It’s not a 5-star hotel, and the aesthetic, comfort, and cleanliness could be improved, but they try to help. The manager, Rob, goes out of his way to support people and make things work smoothly.nThe location is great, close to shopping centers, cafés, and a gym, and sometimes people organize trips to the beach together. Overall, it worked for completing the 88 days and maje good friends. Being around people in the same situation makes everything a lot easier.
During my stay at Grosvenor Backpackers Hostel in Bundaberg, we had a very negative experience.nWe were not asked to cooperate, but were instead told what to do, with the suggestion that our bond could be withheld and that money earned through farm work might not be paid if we did not comply. We experienced this as intimidating and pressuring.nnIn addition, our room was entered without prior notice, including when we were sleeping or not present. I experienced this as a serious violation of privacy. On one occasion, we also saw a staff member leaving our room when we returned from the store, and our concerns were ignored when we addressed this.nnWhen we raised these issues, there was little to no response, which made the stay very uncomfortable.nnWe also heard from other guests who experienced similar situations, concerns, and threats.
It delivers what it promises: you receive work and transport while living in the hostel.nnI lived in the hostel for about five months and worked most of the time. It is also a great place to make new friends.nnOverall, I managed to complete the working days required to extend my visa. I lived most of the time in an 8-person room and had no problems with bedbugs, but I saw some people from other rooms complaining, and after that, I saw the hostel being fumigated.nnThe location is great because you don't need transport to go to the supermarket, as the hostel is right in the city center.nnThe hostel also has room for improvement: the mattresses could be more comfortable, some of the stove burners don't work, and there could be more pots and pans. During the summer, it gets very hot in the region and the rooms don't have air conditioning, only wall fans.nnOther than that, I didn't arrive expecting a 5-star hotel, I arrived without many expectations and overall I had a good experience, which got even better when the number of guests decreased a little after the high season.nnOverall, I recommend it if you are thinking of doing your 88 days there.
Grosvenor Backpackers was the best choice I made in Australia.nI decided to go there to do my 3 months of farm work, and I can say with absolute certainty that it was the best decision of all.nNot only did I find farm work, but I also made amazing friends, met people from all over the world, improved my English a lot, and lived some of the best experiences of my life.nThe owner of the hostel is a genuinely good and honest person — he was like a father to me and my friends. Always kind and willing to help.nHis wife, who was also living there when I arrived, was always very kind as well.nI finished my 3 months and left to go back to my country crying, with only one certainty: that I would return to Grosvenor Backpackers to complete my 6 months of farm work.nAnd that’s exactly what I did. I came back to Australia and to Bundaberg, and what had already been great somehow got even better.nI reunited with old friends because yes, everyone who goes there ends up coming back, made new friends, and got an amazing job where I eventually became a supervisor and stayed for 9 months. And once again, I had to leave in search of new adventures, with a heavy heart.nThey organize vans to go to the beach on weekends, they host super fun barbecues, and we even went to a festival in a nearby town — all organized by the hostel.nThe hostel manager became a friend I still talk to today.nFrom the moment you arrive, you are warmly welcomed. The hostel has a really good vibe. They clean everything weekly, there’s a great common area, and you will definitely feel good staying there.nWhenever I think about my farm work journey, I remember Grosvenor Backpackers with so much affection — and everyone who knows me knows it was one of the best experiences of my life.nAll the great friends I have in Australia today are the result of the incredible moments I lived in Bundaberg and at Grosvenor Backpackers.
Hostel to avoid at all costs. Rooms infested with bedbugs, no cleanliness cockroaches, filthy bathrooms, old mattresses. The manager Rob is dishonest: job promises not kept, only cash-in-hand/black work for weeks before getting an official payslip, and my bond of $101 was never refunded despite his promises. Many other backpackers also complain about absurd rules, poorly maintained showers and kitchen, and an unpleasant atmosphere with aggressive, manipulative managers. Way too expensive for what it is.
