Being a mature learner, I found that Geoff was very helpful and generous with his time and also some free music books to get me started. His free music classes on Tuesday nights are always interesting and I have learnt a lot about theory and I appreciate the music he prepares and copies for us. I love my Casio piano it is a lot of fun for a beginner. I appreciate being in the company of people who have good moral standards.
After being told to come back another day at McCanns because not one of the available staff had any knowledge of their digital pianos, I decided to call into Geoff Long Music on the way home. Geoff stocks Kawai and a few lower end Casio models. I'd read that Kawai was the brand of choice for discerning pianists, mainly for key feel and build quality, and this was certainly the case. Even the cheapest Kawai felt like a professional instrument. Before trying any digital pianos in person, I had my eyes set on a Yamaha just because of the brand name I guess, but after trying Yamahas which were double the price of my budget I was still left wanting. Everything other than a $3000 Roland at Modern Musician had failed to impress. Every Yamaha I tried had a plastic and wobbly/cheap feel, and the Casios seemed to be full of gimmicks like really weird fake aged-ivory. I'm very glad I decided to give Geoff Long Music a chance. I am now the proud owner of a Kawai MP7, which I purchased for well below the best online price in Australia. The service was second to none, Geoff knew his stock, and respected my budget. If you are looking to buy a digital or acoustic piano, I urge you to give this shop a chance.
As a retired musician I wish to thank Geoff Long and his staff for providing music for everyone of all ages and levels. My daughter has been learning piano since she was 5 years old and is playing beautifully. It is refreshing that this sort of business is surviving in a Shiploads/JBHifi world that sell cheap look a likes with no musical knowledge to support the sale. There can never be enough music in the world and enough musicians to play it.
The pianos may be of good quality apart from the second hand trade-ins which are sold for top dollar, however the tuition is appalling. Next to none of the teachers are qualified or registered in teaching music including Geoff Long or perform on a regular basis. Experience is NOT a suitable substitute. Students have the right to a decent education, especially at an early age. Geoff Long and staff are a disgrace to music education.
