I believe this is now under new management. My family has been a fan of Gengys since it opened up in Whangarei for about $28/pp and now it's $38/pp, but that's not too bad considering it's all you can eat. I'm also only eating one meal a day, so Gengys has always been first on the list. We haven't been so regular since Covid. Me and my wife went there 2 weeks ago and were absolutely shocked at the plates, they were all stained and had food or whatever the black thing is on them, this was on every single bowl, even the main dinner plates were covered in oil as if they weren't washed with soap. We weren't the only ones hunting for a clean bowl, I'm surprised it went unnoticed by the staff. My wife's last meal looked as if the food had been cooked on top of the previous person's meal and had burnt remains mixed into her food, tasted burnt as well. All new staff there just don't share the same friendly professional manner that we're so used to. I was reading all the negative feedback a month ago and thought, these must be from people who like to complain, the staff are always super friendly....
Love this restaurant. The staffs are really nice. So many food to choose from. I just hope they regularly refill the cooked ones.
Awesome staff, worked really hard even under pressure as there was a lot of orders and a bit of confusion with order numbers some doubling up in the beginning that was sorted . But not too stressful for them! Food was nice, and plenty of meat choice. Chef's understanding and pleasant. Not a lot of ice cream choice and the self serve was a little makeshift? But pancake recipe absolutely delicious. Seating was well set up so it didn't feel claustrophobic. Clean and spacious toilets. Overall a lovely night.
Can never go wrong with Gengys. Enjoyed the food delivered to your table instead of the long ques around the hot plate. Staff were great.Food: 5/5
Having had a family birthday, we opted to attend Gengys. We arrived at opening and once upon being seated we set right into it. The options of various meats and seafood was amazing. Endless refills if you are able. The selections of oils and dressing to tantalize anyone's taste buds. Side dishes of garlic potatoes, honey kumara, cheesy cauli/broccoli, chips and lovely salads and pancake with icecream, caramel/chocolate/maple syrup. We highly recommend you bring your family to this Restuarant to celebrate family events.
Went here for my birthday in 2020. Great overall and the kids loved mixing it up on their plates. Great variety and atmosphere. Leaving with happy bellies!
Really good family atmosphere. Staff were really helpful and showed me how it works. You get to pick your own food and they cook it for you. But make sure you know what table number and meal number your meal is assigned to just in case they get really busy. Yummy food. My advice would be to chose the lamb it is more tender than beef and it’s all the same price so go for the best. I went to a Mongolian BBQ further south and it cost about $24 but everything has gotten more expensive so $38 here isn’t to bad especially considering it is all you can eat. Fun fact: Mongolian BBQ buffet is so named because apparently after battle Genghis Khan and his troops put their metal shields over a fire and cooked local food they had gathered on them.
Went there yesterday for a small birthday party. We were absolutely shocked! They had hardly any food in the trays and seemed they were under new management? It's not much of a family friendly resteraunt with all the R rated music they were playing, one of which being "barbie tingz" by Nicky Minaj. The place has gone downhill. It's mostly student run with 2 other adults. As soon as we got in, one of the staff had said "we're a bit late now aren't we" yet it was mostly empty and we had made reservations etc. We used to remember gengys as being a family resteraunt with such a great vibe but not anymore. We are really disappointed. We had paid well over $100 for 3 people also. The food wasn't great at all and we felt as though we were being forced out once we had finished eating. Won't be going here again as it's not like it used to be.
Went for dinner for xmas work do, service was absolutely awful, servers were rude and lazy. Did was only ok, was only just warm foods in Bay maire. Very disappointed, will definitely not be coming back
Pretty disappointing dining "experience" last night. We haven't been here for a few years and firstly the price has gone up by about $10 per person. We weren't offered drinks on arrival. The flavour sauces for the main meals seemed watered down and despite putting on a few scoops of sauce and garlic, they were tasteless and bland. The place is just tired, floors in the kitchen dirty and Christmas decorations still up from last year. The 2 girls collecting dirty dishes were really nice though. We haven't been in since before Covid and it wasn't clear where to get extra cutlery from so maybe they should put signs up so you don't have to hunt it down because it's behind the main counter. You always feel like they are just waiting for you to finish eating and leave by cleaning around you and closing in on you, and at 8pm on a Saturday night they had the closed sign up and we were 1 of 3 tables left in there. The price is good if you have a big appetite but for the quality, and if you have a small appetite, it's not worth it. We won't be back.
