The prison was undoubtedly the highlight of our trip to Fremantle. We were staying within walking distance of the Prison so we returned several times to take almost all of the tours on offer.nThe tours were very interesting and the guides were amazing, turning each visit into a great experience.nIt's so cool to be able to explore the waterways underneath the prison and thoroughly recommend the tunnels tour.nI recommend booking tours with enough time apart to get a nice lunch in town, because the cafe was very disappointing for such a busy tourist place.
We did the Behind Bars tour today and were very pleased. Our guide was great. Articulate, knowledgable and with just the right amount of humour to keep a diverse group entertained. The prison is quite fascinating and gives me shivers when I think of the people who lived and died there. Do book as this is one of the more popular tours they do. Have to ring to book, or walk up.
One of the best historical sites in Perth...no surprise it's on the World Heritage list: Access is via tour only. There's 5 tours, so something for everyone. At a cost of $22 for the first and $10 each subsequent tour, they represent much better value than Port Arthur. We did the convict tour with Ian, who was informative and patient. There's also a reasonably priced gift shop if looking for unique souvenirs.
Fantastic place to see in Fremantle. We did the Tunnel Tour with Sarah, they were so knowledgeable, experienced and engaging throughout the whole tour. We go to see so much and learn all about the delicate ecosystem in the tunnel, its construction and history. The tour wasn't too big either, good tour to do with a buddy, but any number of people is fine. Climbing down the ladders and taking the boats through the tunnels were definitely the best part.nIf you do the Tunnel Tour you can also get an 'above ground' tour for $10, so definitely select a second tour to go inside the actual prison and see heaps more. Original bars of soap and everything!
There are four guided tours here, each very interesting. We had friends who did all four tours in one day, which was a lot of fun. I'm not very fit, so I only did two tours, but the tour guides here are excellent storytellers, making the ghost stories of the inmates in the prison fascinating. I particularly enjoyed the tunnel tour, which features the world's only underground man-made waterway. It was thrilling to experience complete darkness, rowing through the waterway, and listening to the guide's anecdotes with the headlamp on. We were lucky to spot adorable mushrooms growing on the wooden stakes. Wearing safety harnesses and helmets, climbing up and down in the tunnels made it truly unforgettable. It's a unique prison tour experience that's hard to forget.
