Mission

fortyfivedownstairs aims to:

present quality productions of new and classic theatre,
encourage innovation, new ideas and hybrid art forms,
give an opportunity to show work in development,
provide opportunities for artists not represented by commercial galleries to exhibit in an inner city gallery.
fortyfivedownstairs also presents debates and discussions on a wide range of contemporary issues and ideas.

It is a non-profit tax deductible incorporated association, under the artistic direction of Mary Lou Jelbart, writer, broadcaster and reviewer.
The Board is chaired by Julian Burnside QC, and the Treasurer is well known specialist arts accountant Tom Lowenstein.

The most perfect venue for our Melbourne CBD wedding. Special shout out to Phillippa for being so lovely and helpful to deal with throughout the whole process and Andy and his tech team for doing an incredible job on the day itself! Visited for the Terraform exhibition by Josh Dykgraaf. Amazing space, lots of light. Love the tall ceilings. Worth a visit.
It is an iconic venue for all the right reasons. The downstairs theatre has hosted some incredible shows - plays, musicals, performance art, cabaret and more. The space is unique and always used in surprising new ways. The staff are excellent and go above and beyond - they are a delight - well trained and knowledgeable. It is also a beautiful multifunctional gallery space. Surrounded by the best food in Melbourne this is a must-go venue. They had lots of toilets and some refreshments available for purchase.
We saw a great performance of "Death of a Salesman". The production made good use of the space and the environment created the ideal setting.
