We visited on a Wednesday morning where there was hardly anyone there.nBuilt in 1882 its the only intact coastal fortress barracks in Australia. With awesome views of Newcastle Harbour and the city. Located at the mouth of the Hunter River just behind Nobby's Heads.nGuns/cannons are still operational, one is fired daily at 1pm. Free entry 10am to 4pm closed Tuesdays. Guided tours are available and the only way to view the tunnels and guns below ground level. Highly recommended for the whole family with great views of Newcastle Harbour, informative display rooms, souvenir shop with cold drinks and clean toilets.
A great place to visit for history and views over Newcastle. The staff were lovely, and the grounds were well kept. The museum has lots of memorabilia that was well presented and organised. You can tour the tunnels but need to book in advance.
Fort Scratchley is a must-visit when in Newcastle! The views from here are stunning, offering a beautiful panorama of the city and Newcastle Beach. It’s a fantastic spot to take in the scenery, and the best part is that it’s free to explore. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Newcastle—whether you’re interested in history or just want to enjoy some amazing views!
Volunteers were very helpful and friendly. Eager to share their knowledge. Very informative. Get there around 1.00 for the time gun going off. Very clean and well maintained.
