The 15 hectare park is located on the south bank of the Maribyrnong River in Footscray and largest and most intact Edwardian garden. The park occupies a wedge-shaped area of land, comprising hill and river flats, between Ballarat Road and the Maribyrnong River, opposite Flemington Racecourse. Lots of amenities including shady trees, bbq area and playing area for kids.
Great park to walk, run, exercise, play picnic, contemplate, study and meditate. The gentle river, the distant city sky, the landscapes are distinct features amalgamated in harmony to balance the mind, body and soul of the visitor. Thanks to the city council for managing so well, this heritage park in Melbourne, a major city of Australia.
Every new years event has been great for couples and young families to enjoy with 9:30pm fireworks, carnival rides, food trucks and free live stage music
I had an amazing time at Footscray Park and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a beautiful and relaxing place to spend some time outdoors. The park is absolutely stunning, with expansive green spaces, well-maintained walking paths, and plenty of spots to sit and enjoy nature.nnThe highlight for me was the lake—it's peaceful and scenic, with lots of ducks and other wildlife around. There’s also a lovely bridge that offers great views of the water, making it a perfect spot for photos or a quiet moment. The landscaping is beautiful, with a mix of trees, gardens, and flowers that give the park a calm, serene atmosphere.nnFootscray Park is well-equipped for families, with playgrounds and plenty of open space for kids to run around. It’s also ideal for those who enjoy outdoor activities like jogging, cycling, or just taking a stroll. There’s a great sense of space, and you never feel crowded, even on busier days.nnI also noticed that the park is very clean, with plenty of bins around and even recycling options. The facilities, including toilets and benches, are in great condition.nnOverall, Footscray Park is a hidden gem in Melbourne. It’s a perfect spot for a day out, whether you’re relaxing by the lake, exploring the gardens, or just enjoying a picnic with friends or family. I can’t wait to visit again!
Footscray Park is 18 minutes drive west from Melbourne, parking at side street of Ballarat Road then walk your way down through lush garden towards the river.nnBest to drive down Farnsworth Ave off Ballarat Road then turn right to the first lights and onto Maribyrnong Blvd where parking is close to the river.nnIt’s a home to a wide parkland adjacent to Flemington Racecourse separated by Maribyrnong river and surrounded by buildings of apartments and Victoria University.nnShaded areas with bbq are quite limited and toilet is a bit of a walk in the middle of the park but clean. There is also unenclosed dogs unleash area otherwise anywhere they are allowed on leash.nnThis area is very busy and parking can be limited during Melbourne cup day as everyone comes for bbq and drink while dressed up listening to the race and watch boats come in and drop more dressed up people across the river gate.nnAlso busy during New Year’s eve as people come to watch the fireworks at 9pm and 12 midnight. People set up picnic while waiting for the fireworks.nnOtherwise, bike riding and walking on a shared trail along the Maribyrnong river are the common activities during the day.
