What is there not to like about Flinders Street! Love the facade of it. Always feels like it’s the icon of Melbourne somehow.nThe heart of town, could conveniently travel to many locations from here. Also so close to Yarra River, perfect for an evening stroll.
Flinders Street Station is located on Flinders and Swanston Streets, Melbourne. Beautiful architecture of the railway station.nn· Green copper dome and yellow facadenn· Oldest train station completed in 1910 in Australia and the busiest with over 1,500 trains and 110,000 commuters passing through each day in the Southern Hemispherenn· Major transportation hub and a popular meeting pointnn· J.W. Fawcett and H.P. C Ashworth designed the stationnn. Took 514,000 pounds and 10 years to completenn· “I’ll meet you under the clocks”, refers to the row of clocks that line the wall above the main entrancenno 13 clocks still displayed to this day, all indicating the different train departures to each suburban train linenno If you meet a Melburnian who hasn’t arranged to meet someone under the clocks, they’ve probably arranged to meet someone on the stepsnnIt is close to important tourist attractions of Melbourne e.g. Melbourne Skydeck, The Block Arcade shopping centre, Crown Melbourne casino, Royal Botanic Gardens, Yarra River, Chinatown, St. Paul's Cathedral, etc.
Flinders Street Station is everything a landmark should be: practical, handsome and deeply woven into Melbourne life. Even on a rainy morning the yellow-and-green façade glows, and the famous clocks at the main entrance still serve as the city’s most reliable meeting point. Step inside and the vaulted concourse hums with buskers, commuters and the odd tourist taking photos of the tiled ceiling. There’s a buzz here that newer stations just can’t fake.nnDay-to-day operations feel smoother than they used to. Clear digital screens make changing between the dozen or so suburban lines painless, and the freshly installed lifts in the Degraves Subway mean you no longer have to battle stairs with luggage or a pram. Platforms are still busy at rush hour, but staff keep people moving and the Myki top-up machines rarely have queues longer than a couple of minutes. Even with the Metro Tunnel works closing stretches of Flinders Street outside, access to the station itself remains straightforward thanks to good signposting and extra staff on the forecourt.nnFor me, the best part is how the station ties the city together: step off a train and you’re a short stroll from Fed Square, the river or a late-night laneway bar. Heritage charm plus genuine improvements to accessibility earn Flinders Street Station an easy five stars.
I visited Flinders Street Station at night during the RISING light event, and it was a completely different sight from the daytime.nnThe station, beautifully lit up in blue, had a magical and surreal atmosphere.nnWhile its usual look is iconic, the illuminated version was truly special in its own way.
Fairly well organised train transport service with alot of history in the architectural building considering the gov here are not renouned at doing really good things for the people as service from time to time will have their mishaps with civil works, canceling routes to buses or general running late excuses. Not high worldly standards compared to other countries but it's no choice for most who can't fathom to do things outside the box, just daily routine all their life and have to go through this station often
