About Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari - Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust Story Maungatautari volcano rises like a beacon above the Waikato just south of Lake Karapiro. The mountain has two access points which also lead to the two enclosures. The southern enclosure is off Tari Road (Pukeatua) and the northern enclosure is off Hicks Road (Cambridge).
