About The Theatre Royal, one of Sydney's premier commercial venues, has played host to a wide range of theatrical entertainment from 'Phantom of the Opera' to 'J Story The Theatre Royal is the oldest theatrical institution in Australia. It first opened as part of the Royal Hotel in George Street in 1832. It lasted 4 years before it burnt down. The name "Royal" then lay dormant ofor over 3 decades until it was attached to an important series of theatre buildings near the corner of Castlereagh & King Streets. Called "The Prince of Wales", it also burnt in 1860. A rebuilt Prince of Wales opened in 1863 but, in 1872, was destroyed by the biggest fire Sydney had ever seen - 26 buildings were completely or partly destroyed. The theatre was rebuilt in 1875 and renamed the "Theatre Royal". In 1972, the Theatre Royal closed its doors to make way for the MLC Office Tower Building to rear majestically into the sky. The "new" Theatre Royal was rebuilt costing $4 million and was designed by the internationally acclaimed and awarded architect, Harry Seidler.
