The district is geographically one of the larger administered by a local authority in New Zealand and includes one of the largest roading networks. The district population however is relatively small; there is a population of 17,634 as at the last census in 2006. The Tararua stretches from the ridges of the Ruahine and Tararua ranges - to the shores of the Pacific, totalling 424,000 hectares with a rich mix of rugged ranges, remote coastline, bush clad hills, farmland and forestry.
