Dunedin Public Art Gallery

Story

The Dunedin Public Art Gallery holds the main public art collection of the city of Dunedin, New Zealand. Located in The Octagon in the heart of the city, it is close to the city's public library, municipal chambers,(Dunedin Town Hall) and other facilities such as the Regent Theatre.HistoryThe gallery was founded by W. M. Hodgkins in 1884 and was the first public art gallery in New Zealand. It originally occupied what is now the maritime gallery in the Otago Museum, was re-located to the Municipal Chambers in the Octagon from 1888 - 90, and then to an annexe to the Otago Museum. It moved to a new purpose-designed building in Queen's Gardens in 1907, to which a structure housing the Otago Settlers Museum was added the following year. In 1927 it was moved to a building constructed for the 1925 - 26 New Zealand and South Seas International Exhibition in Logan Park, Dunedin North designed by Edmund Anscombe. The building was bought and donated to the city by Sir Percy and Lady Sargood, as a memorial to their son who was killed at Gallipoli. The gallery was relocated to its present site, the refitted D.I.C. building, in 1996.

Free gallery which is nice. Lovely place, easy layout. I really enjoy the classic paintings. Some of the modern and native ones not for me .
So appreciative of the work that was done many years ago, to present a gallery of this stature. In Dunedin. Subsequent generations have been the net beneficiaries of the vision that was established and that we can continue to enjoy today. Thank you.
Jan 2020 A lot of paintings to see, I had a really good time here.
Great art gallery. We went specifically for the Ralph Hotere exhibit. It was fabulous.
Stunning gallery. The Ralph Hotere show is not to be missed.
Nice place! So many paintings, they are worth a visit. while also some modern arts, it’s difficult for me to understand.
Classical works are nice, the rest seems too progressive for me
Beautiful paintings! The art gallery is super cool and well organised. = It is free.
